What happens to disbarred lawyers?

I suspect a lot of the them turn out to be total wrecks, but I've heard a lot actually become successful in business, real estate etc.

I knew a very nice one who worked as a paralegal for local government. I never asked what he did. He was very careful about unauthorized practice of law.

I don't know but I'm a lawyer and it would feel beyond horrible for it to happen, but shifting into another career would not be the end of the world. There are many options. I'd lick my wounds and move on.

They get other jobs.

I don't know why you think they'd be total wrecks. It's traumatic to lose your career and have to figure something else out, but they are not inherently bad at working. Most people are disbarred for mishandling client funds, often (not always) with good intentions but bad practice.

The only case I personally witnessed where a lawyer was disbarred rhrnlawyer in question was older and an alcoholic (he was disbarred for being noticeably drunk in court while representing a criminal defendant, coming off the tails of another defendant complaining he was drunk during meetings, the prosecutor's office had to go back and vacate every case where he was the defense attorney going back at least a year).

The attorney in question ended up essentially retiring and died within a couple years. He was older and an alcoholic, so this wasn't surprising. The judge had suggested a rehab program but I don't know if he went.

You mention he was an alcoholic three times.

He was probably an alcoholic.

A lawyer who was disbarred in a high profile firm eventually was able to regain his license and I think he set up a company that provides doc review services or something like that
