Flowers falling from tree- what is the responsibility?

Anonymous
Hi all- my ILs are having this issue so I told them I would ask here.

A new neighbor approached them and said “I don’t normally complain but…” and complained about ILs tree, that is on ILs property, whose flowers often fall onto the neighbor’s lawn, causing a bit of a mess for him. What is the neighborly thing to do? I don’t think anything is on my ILs, but they are super nice people and want to do the right thing. The houses would have little privacy without the tree.

They are welcome to trim the branches that are on their property!

any part of tree crosses over to neighbor's property line? they are allowed to cut those branches down (if they want). flowers on the ground? it's not your IL's problem. sounds like their neighbor is PITA.

Given the time of year I'm guessing it is a crepe myrtle, and, yes, they are very messy.

Flowers, leaves, seed pods, bark, sticks, etc. Trees drop stuff. It's nature. You can't prevent it, and dealing with your own and your neighbor's trees is a part of home ownership.

IMHO, the only time to have a chat about a tree is when it becomes a hazard or is touching your house or over your roof causing mildew. Then you tell your neighbor you will be having a certified arborist prune the part of their tree that is causing a hazard on your property at your own cost.

They'll be wilted and gone in about 24 hours. Tell them STFU.

But more fascinated by the fact that someone tells their ILs they post here. I dont' even tell me SO!

What kind of miserable person do you have to be to complain about blossoms on your lawn?

You’re absurd. No one is cleaning up flowers or leaves from their tree that land on someone’s else’s yard. Literally NO ONE does this. You’re the only person in the world who expects that.
You must be a joy to live next door to in the fall - going around knocking on everyone’s door telling them they have to come get “their” leaves out of your yard.

I wish my biggest problem was having some flowers fall on my side of the fence. Sheesh.

Our neighbor has a sycamore tree that drops leaves ALL YEAR LONG. I cannot imagine complaining to my neighbor about this even though its more work and $$ for me to clean up.

...without impacting the health of the tree. That part is very important.

Also sycamores are beautiful and the leaves are big and beautiful. It's a good problem to have.

None. Flowers, branches, leaves fall. Happens everyday to all neighbors with established trees. These new neighbors sound awful.
