Not sure if this has been discussed or not, but found out today that a wild fire at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon is burning out of control and has destroyed the historic Grand Canyon Lodge building. We were at the South Rim earlier this year and had it on our bucket list to stay at the GC Lodge on a future trip. |
Well, now you can take it off your bucket list. |
It is really sad but I'm so turned off by all the attention seekers posting photos on social of "that time I stayed at the Grand Canyon Lodge" and making it all about them. |
I hadn’t seen that. From what I read the fire service made the wrong call in allowing the fire to continue. |
LOL. Mother nature took care of that one. |
Yes, it is really sad and not being reported much in the eastern US. A bunch of historic cabins and other buildings within the park were also destroyed. |
I do think it's being reported. But it would be a bigger story if it were the south rim which is open year round. The north rim is only open a few months a year and receives way fewer visitors. |
Well, didn’t the lodge burn down already? I thought they rebuilt it in 1932. Not to be that person - but compared to sites in Europe or something, it’s hardly ‘historic.’
‘Iconic’ seems more fitting. |
And, I honeymooned there, so I understand why it’s a big deal to people, but it was just a lodge… |
+1000 This happens all the time after any disaster (see the longwinded social media posts re: where I was on 9/11, etc.). I absolutely hate how narcissistic some people are. |
Cruel but it made me lol I am sorry |
It is the worst. Same with the Notre Dame fire, the Maui fire, it's so predictable. |
This fire started on July 4th and then grew substantially by July 11-12. Sorry to hear that it is still not controlled. Glad we didn’t go to the Grand Canyon for vacation this year. |
I stayed at that lodge. It was actually gorgeous. |
It’s kind of an absurd summer destination anyway. Miserably hot. |
