Former bank robber turned Georgetown law professor, Shon Hopwood found guilty of assaulting wife and dissuading her from cooperating with authorities. Hopwood also previously advised President Trump on criminal justice reform. Pays to be skeptical of such dramatic redemption narratives. |
There will be a high price for all the tampering charges.

As a DC resident, I would have loved to have been on that jury. What an arrogant POS. I hope the wife and daughter can get some good counseling and support. |
Yeah - don’t marry a former bank robber. I don’t much believe in redemption especially amongst the smart and lazy. |
His defenders will find a way to excuse this, too. If sticking a gun in people's faces over and over again is justifiable, what's a little domestic assault and obstruction of justice? |
Sounds like the wife doesn’t want her husband to go to jail, which is why she presumably fled the area and failed to appear in court. |
Not surprising. |
Yikes. One would think he would have tried harder not to mess up. Goingback to prison would be terrible. |
Or because he threatened her, and she feared for her life. Tell me you don’t understand domestic violence without telling me you don’t understand domestic violence. |

Having known (personally) and represented (professionally) a number of women in similar situations, and I can report it’s complicated. There are violent abusers, but there are also couples who seem to thrive on physical fights that really don’t rise to the level of DV. Sometimes the women are the abusers. A sometimes the police get involved when the wife really isn’t being abused and doesn’t want to blow up her family…or the breadwinner husband/father. If they were due in court and he threatened her, it would be really easy for her to flag that for the prosecutor, police, etc. Had he threatened her, she would have been best served by showing up, not leaving. She likely left because she didn’t want the court to destroy her family. Let’s see if she stays with him. |
That theory is incongruous with the DC obstruction of justice statute. https://code.dccouncil.gov/us/dc/council/code/sections/22-722 |
Perhaps. But let’s see if she stays with him. |
