What to wear - wardrobe crisis

Anonymous
Had a dress I was going to wear to a summer (near the) beach party we are hosting this weekend and it’s not gonna happen. The medium petite is too big in the torso and the small petite is just a bit too small, leaving a tiny gap on the button line. I toyed with sewing a tiny snap, but realized it would probably pop at some point in the evening.

So what to do? I have a white skirt - what can I do with it? Or a black silk bias cut skirt? Most guests will probably wear a dress, silk pants, etc. I’m fairly casual, but try to step up a bit for this party. I’m late 50s, petite, pear shape, low 130s in weight.

I can’t wear a kitten heel, etc as I will be in and out of the grass yard and don’t want to sink.

Grateful for suggestions!

Silk isn't the best choice for an outdoor event in the summer humidity. What does the white skirt look like?

It’s a midi cotton poplin skirt. Not this brand, but similar:

50-somethings should not wear halters. I don't care how fit or good you think you look.

I have a few friends who can, but no, not for me, the OP here. Not at all.

While I really appreciate the effort that went into this post, and while I generally don't think clothes should be separated by age groups, these items dont scream "late 50s woman".

I’d go into J Mclaughlin and try on a few dresses and hopefully one will work. They always have great summer color palattes, and the dresses work for my personal style and can be dressed up or down. Also since you are petite a dress will work best as a last minute purchase.

Or, I think the white skirt is great so long as you have a good top.
Anonymous
The red print top from J. Crew is cute. That would work with the white skirt.

A lot of the dresses suggested here feel too long and formal. For a beach party, how about something like this?

Do you have a black silk cami/tank? That would look great with the white skirt!

Looks great for many, but, at my age, that's not really for me.

I have had a lot of luck at Evereve if you have a store nearby

Rails has some really cute dresses. Also, Shopbop has lots of dresses and you can get them within two days.

Alternatively, J McLaughlin is a good call, though they lean toward tall people.

The best white skirt combo I have found at 52 is a higher necked navy tank that is cropped so it meets the waist line of a white maxiskirt. Don't tuck a shirt in.

Also, Tuckernuck has lots of dresses that are beachy.
