Wife Used Her Dad's Truck

Anonymous
For me to move a bunch of their furniture and art to storage and one sibling's house.

This was free labor and a whole Saturday I voluunteered

The truck had a quarter tank of gas and was to be left at the sibling's house for their kid to use it for some school thing and return it to his grandfather today. He did. With a full tank of gas and 250 miles on the odometer. The problem is my money clip dropped out of my pocket and onto the floor of the cab. It held $120. When we called around asking if it had been found my FIL said yes. So I go to retreiee it. It's now $20.

Nephew claims to have no knowledge "whatsoever" about what happend to the $100. And could offer no explanation as to how he filled the truck.

I'm pretty livid and wondering if I just keep my mouth shut and the door cloed on any future help.

You need a better system for holding onto your money if it falls out of your pocket that easily that you don't even feel it when it happens.

Let this go, get a proper wallet, and don't trust the nephew.

Wait were you helping the sibling or were you borrowing the truck to move your own stuff? Whose stuff were you moving?

Id insinuate to him with no witnesses that security footage exists of the transaction. Know what you are dealing with and drop it.

I would be shocked too, and would tell the young man that I've got my eye on him from now on, because I don't condone theft.

You learned a $100 lesson. If your dropped it anywhere else you'd be out $120 and the clip. Just think of it as buying your fil gas. Let it go.

Yeah, I’d be pissed. I might say to the nephew that if he needed the money, you would have easily given it to him. Being a thief and a liar is no way to start out in life.

My MIL and FIL are moving into assited living. My wife volunteered my labor to help empty the house, which included putting somethings in storage for later retrieval by other siblings, as well as delivering some furniture and art to a sibling that had already put dibs on some items.

Their son used the truck after me, put 250 miles on it, filled the tank, and lied about finding my money. He is a POS. And the family is basically doing nothing.

What is your wife saying? If it were me, I’d be ripping a new one with my sibling (parent of nephew).

Nothing you can do.

Y’all are assuming he took the money. What if it fell out of the clip?

So exactly $100 fell out, but $20 managed to stay. And the kid can’t account for how the filled gas tank was paid for. Are you really that dim?

I find it hard to believe that if your nephew stole the money, he would spend it on filling up a truck that he only needed for some errands. What benefit does he get out of filling it up after he’s done using it for errands?

If he was devious, he’d only keep it filled to a quarter tank like he started with and spend the money elsewhere.

You have suspicions but no evidence. You can't prove that you had $120 in the clip and you can't prove that the kid took it. You think he stole it to fill up the gas tank, but why would he do that? Why wouldn't he just keep it if he was going to steal money? Presumably other people at this "school thing" also accessed the truck. Also, the gas tank could have been filled by his parents.

Ultimately you need to let it go. You're the one who lost a wad of cash and didn't even notice. Take better care of your money.

Guilty conscience. And he can't return it empty. And the money was free and so was the joy ride. It makes perfect sense. He had a good Saturday night on someone else's dime.
