what are you asking of your kid in terms of communications once they go to college?

No ask. Why does there have to be an ask? Go with the flow.

For my kid who is not a phone guy, we did Sunday evenings around 6-7. 10 min FaceTime w mom and dad.

Mom texted at other times (more in early freshman year) just to say have a good day, good luck on your midterm, etc.

We did something similar. Call once a week on Sundays and occasional texts during the week. Sometimes the calls are 10 minutes and sometimes the calls went on for 45 mins. Came home for thanksgiving, December, spring break and then summer since college was on the other coast.
