How many grocery stores do you shop at?

Anonymous
My grocery shopping is out of control. I make so many stops and get so many deliveries. How many stores do you shop at and how often. Here is my breakdown.

Costco: once per week. Trying to reduce to every other.

Farm stands: at least one per week. I have two regulars.

Butcher: every other week.

Bread store: there are two but I average probably six stops per month total.

$$$ grocery store: there are two that I frequent, 1-2 stops per week.

$ grocery store: three total, I think 1-2 stops per week.

Pet food store: I really need to get this one sorted but I go every week.

I cannot bring myself to spend the same amount of money on bad bread at the grocery store when I can get delicious fancy bread at the bread store. I’m not willing to spend three times as much on canned beans at the $$$ store so I have to stop at the $ store. I cannot bring myself to buy imported tasteless produce when the farm is 20 minutes away.

I have two kids, a husband, two cats with different diets, a dog and a full time job. How do I get this under control? Is everyone like this?

How would you use the information from other posters? Pointless question IMHO.

Mostly curious but also trying to save myself some time. I can’t figure out how to reconcile the time vs benefit part and want to know what other people do.

Usually two grocery stores a week (rotate between Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s and Moms). I rarely go to a pet store. I order everything online for our dog.

One, get food delivered and that's it. on a very rare occasion I may go to a store.

Do delivery for the pet food at least. I have two cats with different diets, one of whom needs prescription food. I can get all their food and litter from Chewy.

Aside from that, I shop at one farmers market once a week (eggs, meat, fish, bread, fruit, veggies), and Trader Joe's once a week (dairy, nuts, coffee) but Trader Joe's is also close enough (5 min walk) to quickly go to if I'm missing an ingredient for dinner. We go to Giant once a month for staples like tissues, toilet paper, regular old cereal that Trader Joe is too fancy to carry; and Whole Foods once a month for items that are too fancy for Trader Joe's, such as the chocolate I like.

That's it. Family of four, two full-time jobs with downtown DC commutes, two pets. So less shopping than you do, but probably more expensive since we buy about 75% of our weekly food intake at the farmer's market. Time and money are a trade off in my experience, unfortunately. A Lidl is about to open near us so we'll see if that changes our shopping habits ...

I shop a lot, but not quite as many places as you.

I go to TJ probably 3x per week. I get most of my groceries there.

There one grocery store I buy meat in mainly 2x week.

A local organic foods store 3x week for various things, plus they also get bread from a local bakery delivered a few days per week, so I can get it there.

I stopped going to farms stands/farmers markets. I really don’t find the produce better. It’s just more expensive and displayed nicely.

Harris Teeter. There are cheaper stores but Harris Teeter has the easiest parking lot to get in, park, and get out. Plenty of variety of choices. Plenty of self check out lanes. Free carts and bags too.

So, I go a lot too. But I buy more when I can. We are feeding 3 teen athletes (14, 16 and 19) plus DH, me and the dog.

Costco is every two weeks. We stock up on essentials and plan ahead. So I'll buy more paper towels or black beans when I have one or two left in the pack at home if that's what coincides with my trip.

We are at giant/safeway/harris teeter about every other day. Kids will often go themselves to get what they "need" and I'll give them whatever is on my list as well.

We stop at one farm stand occasionally and DH sometimes hits a fancy grocery store on the weekend if we are out of the Costco steaks.

Dog food gets delivered every 6 weeks. We eat out rarely, tho the 14 and 19 yo have been eating at the pool on Friday nights in the summer.

Keeping a running list on our alexa helps us keep track of what we need. I add something (fruit) when we run out but other things (black beans, milk, coffee) when we are down to the last package of the item because those are things we can't live without.

These answers may help. I’m hearing, more delivery, less $ store (which has delivery).

Saturdays - farmer's market I volunteer at, then fish store on the way to the train, then Whole Foods at a train stop on the way home.
Tuesdays - Whole Foods for anything I need bc Amazon Prime member
Thursdays - Trader Joe's on the way home from Office Day

In between those I sometimes walk to a grocery co-op to fill in.

Safeway most weeks.

Giant every other week or so.

Trader Joe’s once a month.

Whole Foods every couple of weeks. No substitute for their low sodium roast turkey. Tried delivery but lazy shoppers kept giving us Applegate and got tired of complaining and being refunded. Get fish there too.

Amazon Fresh delivery weekly for milk, OJ, chicken, etc.

Safeway if I run out if something, or if there for prescriptions.

Rarely if ever since 2020 once every week and a half if that. Love not going much anymore I save time and money.
