Teen son smoking weed

I am looking for an at home drug test to find out the frequency with which our DS has been smoking weed. Last fall we found my DS had been smoking weed when out with friends. He claimed he had tried it a couple of times. We read him the riot act, grounded him and have been keeping a closer eye on him. He is now going into his senior year and we caught him smoking up in his room. We are concerned about him using at all but specifically lighting up alone in his room.

Take the door off, and buy multiple tests and test him every few days but it can stay in the system a while.

His hydration level will also impact the result.

So if he smokes on Sunday and gives you a sample on Tuesday while he's very hydrated, it might be a weak positive. Then if you test him on Saturday while he's less hydrated it may look like a stronger result, even if he hadn't smoked since Sunday.

If yes, why do you care?

If not, focus on helping him with those problems.

She is right to be concerned with the solo smoking.

Grades are good, honors and AP classes- 3.5 gpa. He's a 3 sport athlete with a solid group of friends and a nice girlfriend. I don't like weed at all but yes, I am mainly concerned about smoking alone in his room. He had told us before that he didn't like the way drinking made him act so instead would smoke when friends drank at parties. I kind of understood this but both DH and I have a sibling whose lives have been dogged by excessive weed use and consequently underemployed, isolated, lost relationships. We don't want this for our son.

Why? The smoke part is dangerous but get him a vape pen. Maybe he has anxiety from uptight parents.

You can get tests at CVS. But as someone who loathes weed and has tons of addiction in the family, I will say that just talking to my kid about it helped a lot. He knows I hate it. He knows I worry about addiction. He knows I won't tolerate it.

But he also knows that I know he will experiment. So we talk about responsible use. Source (his friends get medical or just regular dispensary weed from their parents). We talk about the risk of buying on the street. Of using and driving. And how overuse or even sometimes regular use can make school and work performance decline. How it can damage personal relationships. And so on.

Just like alcohol. It can be used socially or recreationally, but needs to be used responsibly (again, he knows I don't approve of illegal use). Try to keep the long game of being responsible in mind. Because we can't stop it. But hopefully we can stop it becoming a problem.

Honestly all you can do is talk to him - talk about his loser uncles (no offense). Taking his door off and drug testing him will just turn him into someone who runs away from you and smokes by himself more.

I've seen a lot try. I've seen no successes.

Haven't seen successes with adults either...

OP here-If we talk to his coaches, he will be off of the team. Athletics are healthy for him and I don't want to blow that up.

Responsible use isn't a thing for teens. Their brains are still developing and it can really screw them up. This risks are very different than use by an adult. Responsible use is a concept for 25+ yos, not teens.

That’s silly. Everybody knows it’s illegal for teens to smoke pot and they aren’t allowed to buy it. Are you sure it wasn’t a cigarette ?
