AAU Tournament and League Formats (League Quality)

Anonymous
Are the formats of the AAU leagues and tournaments listed anywhere. Also are there any rankings of leagues and tournaments. I've found that they vary in quality greatly. Mostly, I think it's due to the formats of the games, not really the reffing. Many of the leagues and tournaments we play in don't record fouls and don't stop the clock, they have like 12-minute halves others will have 14-minute halves and the teams have volunteer clock operators and recorders.

My DD isn't a starter and when they send out polls for availability, I just don't want to volunteer to drive across state lines pay $10-$15 to watch the coaches' kids foul each other for ten minutes. I very much liked the longer format. When we played that format like all of the coaches' kids fouled out, we got to see some actual basketball.

I mean imagine if the NBA was changing the formats of the games. OK everyone, we're not going to stop the clock or record fouls and by the way the game is half as long. I'm sure someone is going to chime in with "Letting the kids play", but why the shorter format?

To make money, of course.

All of those AAU tournament/referees are trying to get the games over as soon as possible. Callling fouls stops the clock if its not a running clock. Thats why they run the clock at a 20 point difference as well. The tournaments go with the shortest game format they think people will pay for and want to schedule games on the hour.

I get that, I'm just not willing to pay for some of them. I would like to know the format/quality before I vote to attend. Do they make this information available to the coaches that sign up?

Yea, the coaches know the rules of the tournament before they sign uo.

So, it's fair to ask if it's a quick and dirty tournament before signing up.

Just look up the tournament rules yourself and then decide if you want to participate that weekend.

Most basketball tournaments are "quick and dirty". They don't care about the quality of the experience. Everyone is just trying to make a quick buck off you.

Do they post these somewhere? I would prefer that, instead of asking the coaches. Though I might make my basic reasoning known. Like, no out of state tournaments unless they are a high-quality experience for everyone.
