Purpose of Interns

If they just do ''busy work'' or work that has to be redone by full-time staff, what is the point of hiring interns?

Especially given companies are giving less return offers due to budget restraints

I see it as an act of service to help teach new lawyers a little bit about a new area of law rather than something intended to benefit the employer. Because youre right that interns take up more time and resources than they contribute.

It's SUPPOSED to be an apprentice type situation where what they learn is their pay.

Often they are just used as coffee fetchers and someone to slap on the booty though.

They don't do shit where I work. They dump them on some projects and you think, hey I'll try and get them doing something meaningful, for them. And then they're out every other day attending some workshop on how great it is to work for a gigantic corporation and we're all building a better future by extracting gigantic margins for creating PowerPoint decks. Then they leave.

We hire interns and they do plenty useful things. But we are a tech company. Lots of bug to fix, or electronics to solder etc etc.

Pressed send too soon. Our goal is for the sophomore and junior summer interns to come back to us full time after graduation.

I learned years ago that interns mainly get in the way, and that managing them is similar to babysitting. I always decline requests when the human resources division contacts me to assign an intern.

Having an intern is a part-time job for sure.

No point in having them around now that we can't have sex with them.

Since when? What happened? Dear God, WTH happened?

It turns out kids just don't care about sex anymore. That or they're all xanaxed out.

Its like an extended interview that gives you a better read. Also name recognition for your firm within campuses

This. They are a slight net hit to overall productivity, but we bring back the interns who are self-starters willing-to-learn, and generally we try to hire them once they graduate college. For both sides it is a kind of test drive.

When I was a summer intern at an A&E firm, I learned that I did not want to become a PE. Very valuable to learn that then - rather than learning it later on.

My intern is fine! 4.0 GPA and the project is moving forward with their inputs. Very knowledgeable and curious to learn and contribute.

So wtf are you guys talking about? I would not request an intern for fetching coffee. I need work power to get sh*t done.

I mean if your job can be performed quite easily by an intern that doesn't say much for the work y'all are doing.
