TJ 2025 seniors destination

Anonymous
TJ Today published June 2025 senior issue with the Class of 2025 college admission information.

https://www.tjtoday.org/40743/showcase/senior-issue-25-says-goodbye/

Anyone cares to chime in how this class comparing with previous TJ graduating classes?

Please keep discussion civil, not too much political, just go with facts and comparison.

Thanks!

data wise, seems less than 250 students in the graph, that's less than half of graduating class. But still interesting data to look at.

So by what’s posted, George Mason has most TJ kids listed- 21 and then 20 to UVA and 19 to Purdue. Only 2 to MIT? Only 1 to Stanford?

Are the kids going international from those places and going back home? Is going to TJ as an international student a thing?

We used to send like one kid to Princeton and we sent 5 this year.

What is interesting to me is Penn State. I assume that’s a merit scholarship thing going on there because that is a huge jump for us.

As for George Mason- considering the changes to the federal school loan limits (parent plus limits being capped) this is unsurprising.

Last year was a down year for Princeton. Also, this year, 4 are going not 5. In 2023, 4 went to Princeton. In 2022, 5 went to Princeton. Last year was a bumper year for MIT/Harvard. In 2022, we sent 9 to MIT.

Typically, TJ sends 150 - 200 to Top 30 schools. This year is more like 100. Part of it is, we usually send 40-plus to UVA and it was 20 this year. Overall, still pretty good, but not as many as previous years.

The colleges are no longer taking the best students. So you can take college admissions with a grain of salt and don't hold it against TJ students.

In no way would read any admissions against students. To me is reference point only for what happening then at other schools. Would expect more taking advantage of community college and possible transfer or keeping instate for in state tuition. I was surprised more weren’t going to MIT though and wonder if Purdue for example is better about giving $/aid to get more TJ to attend. Isn’t the original principal of TJ at stem school in Illinois now? Maybe it’s that Illinois knows what TJ means more than other states bc of that. And maybe are more at the schools as other poster called out not all graduates listed.

Purdue is an insane bargain. It costs less to go out of state to there than the in state price for the top VA universities.

They probably have dual citizenships and get some kind of home student tuition break.

Most of them would go to the VA top universities if they could get it. It is harder to get to VA top universities from TJ even for smarter kids

Not as sure about that. Purdue for engineering is at least as good if not better than VA Tech in that space and Tech had the best engineering school of the top VA 3.

Agreed, but you have to realize not everyone is going for the space program!

It would be good to know what %ge of the T20 is missing vs. the rest. I would think 20:80 % ratio (T20 vs Others) for the remaining 250+ would be a good guesstimate knowing most of the T20 admits are the same students and they only get to select one of the many T20s they get admitted in
