Udvar-Hazy Slated to Lose the Discovery Spacecraft

The current Big Beautiful Bill will have the Discovery space shuttle transfered from the Smithsonian's Udvar-Hazy to a new facility in Texas.

I realize this is part of the ongoing Big Beautiful Bill, but I hope it doesn't get lost in the threads. For the current Congress to strip such a huge part of American history from our country's Smithsonian museum is such a horrible thing to do.

The BBB only includes part of the funds needed. This is only a down payment, it won't happen yet.

This is such bullshit. There's no reason for the privatization of a public asset which is highly visible at Udvar Hazy and will be much less so in Texas.

So, is Elon Musk taking it? He has a compound in Texas filled with his baby mommas.

The smithsonian has already said it isn't going anywhere. Please stop.

They have no way to get it from A to B. The planes that did it are no longer in service. It will also cost way more than expected. Cornyn and Cruz are so petty.

Where and when did it say this?

Wait until you hear how much it’s going to cost to move it. IIRC it was $180,000,000.

Source? Because the Smithsonian so far hasn't put up much of a fight in other conflicts with this administration.

Glad i saw it when I did

As an 80s baby, I grew up with that program.

With Trump gutting NASA, I'm not sure how many more American crafts there will be.

This isn't going to happen.

1) how do they even move it there? The NASA 747 transporter aircraft is already in the Davis Monthan boneyard.

2) it makes more sense for a shuttle to be in Houston (rather than DC or NYC) because at least Houston, California and Florida were all crucial to the shuttle program. DC? NYC? Nope.

This is going to happen because they are going to charge for tickets to see the shuttle. If there's one thing Republicans actually do, it's contracting things out for higher prices.

It’s not in DC or NYC. And Space Center Houston already has a full scale replica shuttle. Why do we need to spend $300-$400 million on this?

What if Kansas wants the ruby slippers? Because Dorothy was from Kansas after all.

Maybe North Carolina wants the original Wright brothers aircraft. (Or maybe Ohio has a better claim to it?)

How many other American historical and cultural items can be used to bargain for legislation now?
