No word yet after a panel interview for a VP job that feels like a perfect fit. I had two screening calls, one with the recruiter and one with the CEO. Then I met in person with three teams of 2-3 people each (direct reports, peer collaborators, and senior leadership). I thought each interview went really well and was told that the next step would be for “candidates” to meet with the board. I believe there are 2-3 other contenders according to the recruiter who is a former colleague. I followed up with each person individually with a brief personalized thank you email.
I wrote to the recruiter last week (one week after the interview) and she hadn’t heard anything yet. Would you reach out to the CEO at this point to inquire about timeline and express continued interest? It’s summer and a hybrid office, so I know decisions can take longer but I’m starting to think this ship has sailed. WWYD? |
I wouldn’t think the news is bad. Two weeks isn’t long in the summer, especially if the employer is trying to schedule in-person interviews. |
Be patient - people are busy, on vacation, it's a holiday week. You could ask the recruiter, after the 4th of July, when the Board is next scheduled to meet - that will give you a timeline |
Definitely don’t reach out to the CEO. Just wait and as much as possible put it out of your mind. You can’t do anything now except wait |
Agree this could be seen as annoying. Did you send thank you notes expressing interest to everyone already? Sometimes especially in summer it just takes a while to be able to schedule a meeting where everyone internally can connect, discuss, and make decisions. |
This happened to me for a similar position (VP level) at a “reputable” tech company - I went through at least 4 rounds and panels, all the way up to the senior leadership, great feedback from all. And it’s now been 3 months and they totally ghosted me. The recruiter has followed up with no info. The position is still showing as “under consideration” in my career account profile, and they have also reposted the position with a lower salary and less senior title and appear to be starting from scratch.
I have since accepted another position which moved normally and quickly. They wanted me from the start, didn’t play games, and didn’t jerk me around. My advice: if they are dragging heels and not getting back to you in a couple of weeks, move on and don’t hold your breath. |
That’s brutal. What a waste of time for both you and the company. They’re probably awful to work for. |
What pathway did you use for these 2 opportunities (HH, personal network etc.)? Curious if you saw difference depending on pathway... |
OP here. Thanks for talking me down. I did thank everyone personally the day after my interview. So now I’ll just wait. While I do, does anyone have encouraging stories of offers coming after 2-3 weeks of the interview? |
Oh yes. I'd say 2-3 weeks is on the short end. If they want you, they will not forget about you. If like someone else better, they will. And there's not a lot to be done about it unless you have strong inside connections who can make them take a second look. |
I am amazed at how little people know about hiring. Each person who sat in on one of your interviews has to fill out a questionnaire on you. Then they all have to be reviewed, and compared to the other contenders. The people who have to fill these out have other things to do and also go on vacations, or get sick, or forget. So they are getting chased down to get it done. It has nothing to do with you. |
I had a company give me an offer months after the interview. Anything can be going on. Keep job hunting and keep an open mind about that place. |

Spouse started interview process in mid-January, so many interviews and and eventually hired to start Aug 31. The waiting was painful, but it was/is his dream job, had been there 5 years this coming August. And yes, covid may have played a part, but come on, 8 months is just too much |
