Issue found day before last day of project

Anonymous
My 6 week project is wrapping up. I noticed today that the light fixture that was installed today is about 2 inches off center in the powder room. Everything else has been done extremely well. I had to ask for one tile that was damaged when a shower curtain rod was installed to be repaired and they fixed it perfectly.
Final invoice was sent and there were two unplanned things that are listed that he is not charging us for.

I want this over so badly. I want to end on good terms. I am thinking of not mentioning the issue with the light fixture because I am exhausted.
I am also totally OK paying for work done.

Should I ask the contractor to tell me a fair price for the extra work (I trust him to be fair here) pay it and then also ask him to move the light fixture?

This is what is installed. https://www.build.com/kichler-55101/s1834040?uid=4376706&searchId=T4yMlk5Njl

I'd also be just as happy to have them install this https://www.build.com/kichler-55150/s1907821?uid=4505373&searchId=3JQAegfNVR and I think they could center this one and cover the existing hole.

I just want this all to be over! Tell me what to do

Ask them to fix it and offer to pay for it.

Be sure there's not a reason. Like a stud directly behind where the wiring needs to enter the fixture.

When you said 2 inches off, I immediately suspect a 2"×4' stud is interfering.

Tell him you will pick out a new fixture if you know what went wrong behind the wall.

It will drive you crazy if not fixed. But be nice.

Great advice. Thank you so much. Honestly, three beautiful new bathrooms and this would make me crazy.

Lmao 2 inches? Please stop obsessing and offset the mirror and it won't be noticed

I've thought about this a million different ways. It's an oval mirror with a two light fixture. It's obviously off center now and if i move the mirror then the whole situation will be not centered around the faucet.

I'm also thinking of swapping the mirror for a rectangle and then I agree that it won't be noticed at all.

Have a discussion with your contractor and make it like you want, now. Or it will bother you. Have them explain why it’s off center. It sounds like you’re being reasonable so they should help you.

I doubt that was done without reason. They should have communicated that, but most likely it's not possible so be prepared for that possibility.

Yep, This is why I'm going through the plans A, B, and C. I'm now remembering some offhand comment from day one about how the studs were not standard size in this house.

Will wonders never cease.
I was just served an ad for the mirror that could fix this problems.

If I swap this in:

for what's there now

It wont be noticeable.

Just talk to them. Say you noticed it’s off center and you don’t want to move heaven and earth, but you’re willing to pay for it to be fixed if it can be done reasonably.

You all were so helpful.

I handed the helper a tip and asked him if he noticed. He confessed that he overlooked it.
He can cheat it one inch to the right and agreed that a mirror that won't draw attention will make it not observable.

I asked the main guy to adjust the invoice for the unplanned work, he declined. (per the script)

I asked if they would come back and change the mirror out when all is said and done and he said yes.

I am truly satisfied, and I feel like I'm leaving on good terms with everyone.

If in a year, it's making me crazy, I will pay to have it changed and it will not make me angry to do so.

I would say
I love the work but I would love it more if the vanity lights were moved more.
I will pay you for the change.

That’s a great result! Glad it all worked out.

This is really confusing: you paid for a job. It was done wrong, and do you offered to pay for it again to be done right?

Are you a bad contractor trying to condition people into not getting what they are paying for?

Why should you pay for them to fix it? If it is their mistake, they need to fix it. It’s not the same as when you start a project and find a new issue that wasn’t obvious before the project began so wasn’t in the scope of work, and now you need to fix it.
