It's like I always tell my kids when we discuss the news: "Don't worry, the rich will be OK. We're not 18th century France."

And add in: never sell. The market always corrects itself.

that is true but people dont live forever. My old boss used to always say Remember the 70s!. Stocks were flat the whole decade. Good luck being a stock broker or selling options on something that stays flat in price. Both puts and calls lost money and stocks no gains and with interest rates shooting up the dividends were less than plain old treasury bonds.

Just curious, I have 18 years in, 10 of those were part-time. My tsp barely at 500k, I feel way behind...or is this typical?

+1
Don't forget to add about 7% annual inflation until the early 80's. Yes, it USUALLY corrects in your lifetime lol

Also, stock markets have entirely disappeared in the past.

The average 401k balance at age 40 is around $100k. You are behind if you compare yourself to the wealthy.

I moved a bunch of my 401k into a money market fund right after the election and put almost all of it back into stock funds when the market tanked in April. Complete dumb luck and I know against every rule about 401(k) investing.

And don't forget that people made money in stocks in the 1970s. Not all losses. Every broker did not go broke. 70s were a value investing time.

Good for you. Do you think that you can repeat this again one more time this year?
