ireland or japan?

I have an opportunity to do a 13 ish day trip to either Ireland in June (Dublin, galway, killarney, kilkenny) or Japan in September (tokyo, hakone, takayama, kyoto) in September. These are small group tours and I've been asked to 'host' as part of my work so my expenses are paid.

I've been to Tokyo once for a few days, but that's it, and never been to Ireland, though have been to London a couple times (and throughout france, spain, italy, germany, switzerland and scandinavia). Both sound intriguing, neither would be the kind of trip I'd do on my own but will be filled with organized cultural tours etc.

Leaning toward Japan, because seems a bit harder/more expensive to do, on the other hand, its a place my family wants to visit at some point but who knows when that will happen....

Would love thoughts, pros/cons, etc!

If someone else is paying for it: Tokyo, hands now.

For 13 days and fully paid: Japan. It’s easier to find opportunity to go to Ireland another time.

Japan for sure. Ireland is much easier to see everything you want to see on your own.

Japan, no question. Especially in September. What a treat.

I feel like Ireland is more of a place to *be* and less of a place to *do*. It was pleasant, but honestly a little boring for my kids. I feel like it's a nice place for older folks to visit; my kids were too young to go to pubs for live music, and if there was particularly cool cultural/ museum stuff, we didn't find it. Galway has a fishermen's museum I think, plus one street of little touristy shops. A little boring even for me. Everyone loved Giant's Causeway, but your trip is focused on the south, so it's not on your list. We don't have any family connection to Ireland, and that probably makes a difference.

Japan on the other hand... so much to see. So much to do. And also a lovely place to just be. I'd go for work and then turn around and go back with the family. We travel a lot and Japan was the best trip we've taken together. It had something for everyone. Lovely gardens; history everywhere and inexpensive well-curated museums; tech and pop culture; animal cafes and weird shopping; accessible food for every palate. I would not recommend it if you have anyone in your family who is elderly or mobility impaired. There's simply no place to sit down! We routinely did 20,000 steps a day, so I definitely noticed that lack of benches.

Amazing, plus your expense account will be nice.

No brainer: Japan.

Another vote for Japan! I work for a Japanese company and I get to go for work. It's great, especially since you will have the trip paid for and have some locals take you around and help get you off the beaten track!

I’ve been to both — Japan absolutely.
