I feel like it's a nice place for older folks to visit; my kids were too young to go to pubs for live music, and if there was particularly cool cultural/ museum stuff, we didn't find it. Galway has a fishermen's museum I think, plus one street of little touristy shops. A little boring even for me. Everyone loved Giant's Causeway, but your trip is focused on the south, so it's not on your list. We don't have any family connection to Ireland, and that probably makes a difference.

Japan on the other hand... so much to see. So much to do. And also a lovely place to just be. I'd go for work and then turn around and go back with the family. We travel a lot and Japan was the best trip we've taken together. It had something for everyone. Lovely gardens; history everywhere and inexpensive well-curated museums; tech and pop culture; animal cafes and weird shopping; accessible food for every palate. I would not recommend it if you have anyone in your family who is elderly or mobility impaired. There's simply no place to sit down! We routinely did 20,000 steps a day, so I definitely noticed that lack of benches. [/quote]
