The article is from 2023, though I'm pretty sure that following the renaming petition process, MCPS didn't seem to have any updates regarding to the renaming of some of the schools listed in this article.

They decided that the process of renaming (if desired by the community) would happen with building updates since redoing signage is already part of that cost. |
The only one that went anywhere was Magruder. It came to the board this past February, but they couldn't agree on what to do because the community was divided and the cost of changing the name was estimated to be nearly $1M. So they ended up saying we think the name should be changed in the future, in conjunction with a major capital project to rebuild Magruder. But that was non-binding and not funded. |
Any idea what Magruder would be renamed? |
No, they didn't discuss possible names. |
Richard Montgomery owned slaves. Are we renaming the county also? |
That whole board meeting was an embarrassing mess. MCPS and the BOE have no idea what they're doing. |
This is what confuses me the most. Montgomery County is also named based on Richard Montgomery, so it would even be harder to think about MCPS' decision on renaming both the HS and the county. |
They haven't had any ideas yet, nor with the other schools. But I had some ideas on what Magruder might be changed to if it gets renamed. 1. Norbeck High School - About half of Magruder's cluster sits on the Norbeck area (though you can debate where exactly Norbeck is considered part of in Olney and Aspen Hill. And this is probably an OK name considering Magruder cluster is not affected by the Crown or Woodward boundary study. 2. Muncaster High School - I think this is the better choice. Magruder sits on Muncaster Mill Road and I wouldn't see any problems with this. Unless "Muncaster" is also named after someone and they would hold some controversies. |
Couldn't they just replace Rockville High's name and give it to Richard Montgomery?
That way, it's basically this: Richard Montgomery now gets the Rockville High School name Rockville High School gets a new name, and I'd assume the best choice for it's rename is probably "Rock Creek High School", even though this is obviously not confirmed yet and only just my thoughts honestly |
That sounds unnecessarily confusing. |
Umm - Mr. Muncaster? All the ___ mill/farm road names were the roads to somebody’s mill or farm. |

The Muncaster family owned at least one slave—see link referencing “negro girl Bess” as property. I only skimmed it and stopped reading after that note. Nonetheless, nobody knows anything about the Muncaster family and the name of the road certainly doesn’t “honor” a specific noteworthy member of the family. Rather, the street name is in reference to the mill by the same name. I bet if you asked MoCo residents who Magruder was or who Muncaster was very few people would know. Norbeck would be a confusing name since the school doesn’t sit on Norbeck Road. Muncaster Mill HS would be fine since it seemingly pays homage to the street and perhaps the mill without referencing a person. What we don’t need are a flurry of new school names honoring random people. Just stick with streets/neighborhoods imho. |
The Muncaster family also owned slaves so that solves nothing. https://mcatlas.org/hp2/hpdocs/M_%2022-07.pdf |
They should leave Rockville as Rockville and rename Richard Montgomery “North Bethesda.” 😆 |
