Are any teams looking to postpone or cancel their Monday B meets with the heat advisory that doesn't expire until 9pm? |
Can they speed up the time lines mix age and gender? |
No |
We combine heats at every B meet if we can to move faster. That won’t be because of the heat. We aren’t going to cancel our b meet for the heat. |
I think it should be canceled. I think I’m in the minority, but this isn’t last summer when we were all used to the heat.
Hopefully families look at the weather and take into account whether their kids can handle it. Real temps of 101-105 with high humidity is asking for kids getting heat exhaustion. Not to mention the adults who have to volunteer |
If you think your kids can’t handle the heat, then don’t send them to the meet. Seriously. If a bunch of people make that decision it will shorten the b meet for everyone. |
I am a parent, curious about this.
Of course families can elect their child to stay at home but it still takes tons of adults to run the meet. This heat is serious. |
It’s a no win situation. Cancel the meet and you’ll get complaints that b meets are already few in number and you’re depriving non A meet kids the chance of getting races in or kids an opportunity to move up the ladder to make an A meet. Teams can figure out what works best for them. Shorten the meet and you’ll get the same complaints. Reschedule the meet and you’ll deal with volunteer complaint. On the plus side you’re talking about a meet that starts at 6pm. |
I think folks by now can estimate the timeline of when certain events will take place? At our b meets backstrokes is never before 7 bc of the masses of kids that swim FR. If you’re doing BR you’re lucky to start by 8. |
The heat will affect performance |
Stay home. That’s an option. No one is forcing you to go. Some of us have no problem with the heat. |
There are measures to help kids stay cool. The kids are in the pool for warmups. Our coaches tell every kid to bring a bandana or a washcloth to soak and keep around their neck. The real risk is to the adults who are standing on the hot pool deck and can't get in the water, but we can use cooling cloths and take liberal water breaks. The heat will start to ease by 6 pm anyway. |
I'm the poster who thinks the meets should be canceled. My kids are going to swim free and then leave, even though one of them is trying to make an A meet in breaststroke.
At 6 PM my weather app says the air temp will be 97 degrees, 115 heat index. I do think it would be a tough call to cancel, but we have 6 B meets, so still plenty. I'll be at the whole meet to volunteer, and will be fine, but worry about older parents, and young kids. We attended every one of the crazy hot meets last summer, but this one is different- no one is acclimatized yet. But again, I know I'm in the minority, and I have not said a word to the reps or anyone else. |
Any chance of thunderstorms? |
That’s the thing about being an adult. You’re free to make your own choices. |
