ECNL U15 Girls roster size

Anonymous
Is it normal for ECNL girls team roster to grow well above 18 players when heading into the U15 and beyond high school age?

If common, how is it managed? Do players regularly not dress/play? Does the team lose players down the way because of roster size?

Someone else can give you specifics since we're not at that AG yet, but yes definitely normal. Also, sometimes the really inflated rosters are just so kids can move between NL/RL.

Large rosters are normal. It is a bit like the hunger games and stressful on a week to week basis. Most of the kids duel rostered never play for ECNL.

Yes. We had 21 in u15, now 25 for u16. Unfortunately, the older they get, the more injuries are incurred.

Are you trying to be facetious?

Probably unintentional but I like the concept of “duel” rostered…

Basically players must compete for time, and this is because of big rosters and more limits on subs. Coach generally tells people who will get to dress for the game or not. And even if you dress, you might only play 5-10 min.

That said, good teams offer lots of opportunities to play- either by dual carding players or by rotating players through. Sometimes they will even enter the team in multiple leagues to allow more minutes for all.

Not OP but not at all. If your ECNL team has 22 players and you're #22, you may dress every 3rd or 4th game, as player #18 on the roster. You play 10 minutes, at most 20 minutes in that game. If the game is a 1 goal differential the whole game, they you don't play. At my club, these players get some opportunities to play on the ECRL team if it needs players for games. I don't know how many minutes the NL player playing down get because I've not seen an RL game.

U15 had 21 this season
Couple ACL injuries moved it down to 18

U14 had 24

10, 20 minutes is a waste for time. Basically you are in an ECNL team but you are not playing ECNL lol. Playtime is key regardless of the badge.

Most clubs roster 20~ players on their RL teams so what are the odds that team will ever need players?

This is the key. High school is really when injuries pick up. Sure, they can happen before, but in HS, I would count on 10-15% of the roster being injured at any time. So an 18 girl roster becomes 16, then you have the normal illness issues, etc.

I still think 18 is about ideal, though, but I like short benches.

The unfortunate truth is that it’s all about the top players. The rest are there to help fund and support them. As long as you know what you are signing up for to each their own. Some people are ok with it. Others would be best leaving for another team where they would be one of the top players.
