Hello,
My wife and I are in the process of finding an agency for foster care adoption. We have narrowed down to these two agencies. We'd appreciate anyone that can share their experience working with either agency. |
| We worked with the Barker Foundation (but not for foster care adoption). We found them to be incredibly helpful, organized, compassionate, professional and kind during the process. They are one of the few agencies to offer support throughout the life of the child not just right when the placement occurs. I highly recommend them. |
That's great to know. Was it your recent experience? I tried to find reviews of both but most of the reviews were not recent. |
| We found them terrible. The homestudy worker was barely competent and gave our friends on the West Coast a hard time for not anwsering their phone for a reference the first call and when they called back she was grocery shopping (despite giving that time to call) and refused to talk to them. After approved they refused to work with us as we asked questions about their contract which says they can drop you at any time for any reason and keep your money. They don't have a lot of children/placements. You are better off getting a homestudy through another agency like JSSA and doing an out of state adoption agency and search on your own. Ask about their placement rates. Ask about how many families complete home studies and sign with them. Ask how many placements they get a year. How many waiting famlies they have. What is the longest a family is currently waiting. Ask how many new families they take vs. the placement rate. They kept initially pushing us to sign but also do private and a second agency as they weren't getting placements. International experiences with them tend to be better. |
Sounds like an ad or agency worker. |
| If you are doing foster to adopt, go directly with the government agency as you will get the placements first. Except for DC, many don't use outside agencies except for hard to place kids or overflow. |
That's funny. I'm neither. Just someone who worked with Barker who was very happy with the process. Maybe the process was positive because we were so grateful. By the time you get to adoption you are just used to things not going your way. Who knows? But we continue to have a strong relationship with them years later. I have recommended them to many people and every single one has had positive things to say. |
I know multiple people who had very bad experiences. You were lucky. |
| I too had a bad experience with Barker and do not recommend them. I am now working with another agency. |
This is DEFINITELY an ad lol. This smacks of an adoption agency worker who thinks the adoptive parents and the birth mother should be so grateful to them. |
They took our money, no child. Go directly to the county and foster to adopt. |

JSSA is ok
|
| We did mot adopt through them but use them for post adoption counseling and love them. |
