Social Security office wait times

Anonymous
I received a letter stating that I had been overpaid by the Ss office. I tried calling three times today to repay them. Each time I was on hold for over half an hour before the system hung on me. DOGE at its finest….

It’s funny you think that this hasn’t been happening for years. Lol.

Yes, it had been happening for years and DOGE still wanted to cut all phone service.

I work for SSA. We are unbelievably underwater, and it’s only going to get worse. We were staffed at 1985 levels BEFORE Elmo let anyone who wanted to take early buyouts. Many field offices lost over 25% of their staff. Then they reassigned GS—14 HR specialists from headquarters to so the jobs. Except they have zero experience with substantive SS processing and it takes 3 years to become a journeyman claims processor. And, BYW, takes an experienced employee offline t train and mentor.

Be as nice as you can. We are all doing the best we can in an impossible situation. But never fear, our new Commissioner has promised:

He can clear our 6.2 million claim backlog in less than a year. Because when he work for a company that **processed credit card transactions** he cleared more “transactions in a day than we do in a year. Sure Dude. Running a Visa card and processing 2000 pages of medical records to make a disability determination using thousands of pages of laws, regs, and sub regulatory guidance— exactly the same thing.

He can get our wait time down to 3 minutes— wait— LESS in less than three months. Because he ran a call center once. Because a call center and a helping a Boomer with screwed up benefits and a highly technical Robles — exactly the same thing.

We are going to become a technology first agency! Run by app!

And, we are going to make SSA Fun again (TM— him).

We are all going to die.

Liar.

The Social Security Administration (SSA)'s phone service has been a point of contention, with DOGE (Department of Government Efficiency, led by Elon Musk) initially proposing significant cuts and changes, including requiring most claims to be filed in person. However, after public outcry and concerns about accessibility, the SSA has largely reversed these changes, continuing to allow most claims to be filed over the phone. While direct deposit changes can no longer be made solely over the phone, the SSA still offers phone support for a wide range of services.
Here's a more detailed breakdown:
Initial Proposal:
DOGE, under Elon Musk, proposed drastic cuts to the SSA's phone services, aiming to shift most claims to in-person or online applications.

So if SS was rife with so much fraud and abuse that they needed to upend the system, where are the criminal charges? If DOGE has evidence of fraud and abuse, they need to take it to court.

Do they have evidence the FBI and Bondi need to see?

Lots of accusations against SSA, but no evidence and charges.

All I know is that a friend tried for months to get things straightened out after her husband died. Phone calls, zoom calls--thought it was fixed. It wasn't. Finally, went to the office and waited. Saw a person and it was finally solved.

Do you know who was president when she went through this? Biden.

This has been a problem for a long, long time.

It may be worse, but it has been a problem for years.

So I said that DOGE wanted to cut all phone service, you call me a liar, and you offer up the above as proof? That I’m a liar? Sad.

Claims only. What about everything else SSA does?

Actually no it has not. Trump has decided to make it impossible to contact Social Security Administration by firing many of the people who’s job answered the phones.
