How intellectual is UGA?

Anonymous
Would it be good for DS who wants to major in humanities and loves intellectual conversation?

If the extent of intellectual conversation means yelling “Go Dawgs” then yes.

I hope this is a troll post.

I mean its a huge school - pretty sure they can find their people.

New England LACs and Ivies are going to be more in tune with your kid's interests and leanings. But you should really know this already.

Georgia parent whose kid looked at both UGA and the New England LAC’s. Humanities kids can most definitely find their people and the intellectual atmosphere they want at UGA. There’s plenty of academic opportunity there, along with plenty of school spirit and a campus community that isn’t so divided or polarized socially or politically). Go on the website and look at what the kids there have done or even better, talk to alumni or people whose kids are current students. Or visit and see for yourself. Don’t listen to the parents on this board who seem to think that the world begins and ends with the Ivies and SLAC’s. (I went to an SLAC that this board seems to love, but my kid didn’t want that).

UGA has the #1 honors college which is extremely intellectual. It’s on par with a T10 LAC and UGA as a whole is T20.

I never understand why so many people post things like this. Big strong schools like UGA are going to have plenty of intelligent students. Kids find their people and it’s amazing how many kids allegedly need to be around such intellectually stimulating people at all times.

UGA is a very large SEC school which provides a climate of football and partying. But because it is large, your student will be able to find their niche relatively easy. I wouldn't worry about it.

Yes but UGA is one of the top academic schools in the SEC.

Umm, no. UGA is a very strong school with an excellent honors program. Intellectual students should be able to find plenty of peers. But it is certainly not a Top 20 school.

T20 Public

T20 public, top honors program, and great business, journalism, public policy, and veterinary schools. Robust arts program as well. Also offers majors/programs one would never find at an SLAC- risk management and interior design to name a couple. For many, it’s the complete package academically and socially.
