Rock Creek Park DOEE programs budget cuts!

Anonymous
Hi DCUM- sharing this petition from the Rock Creek Park Conservancy because I know many on this board use and enjoy Rock Creek Park. Please sign and circulate before Friday, June 13 when the budget hearing will be held.

“If you enjoy and value Rock Creek Park and are a DC resident, please sign this petition, send an email or call your council member to restore budget funding for FY 2026. The park’s budget is being slashed by 24% in the Dept of Energy and Environment (DOEE) line item which is the largest cut to any DC agency!

The green infrastructure maintenance and water quality monitoring programs have been cut by 100%. As we know, DOEE is responsible for the environmental protection of our city.

WHY THIS MATTERS:
-Wastes millions in prior investments by abandoning maintenance of existing green infrastructure built by the city to protect our water quality.
-Risks reduced water quality, Clean Water Act violations, neighbor complaints, and shorter facility lifespans.
-Eliminates green jobs for District residents who rejoined the workforce through these maintenance programs.

Please sign and circulate to friends and family before Friday, June 13 when a budget hearing will be held.

In addition, a 2 minute call or emails to your respective Council member will be incredibly impactful. Contact information and the email template are below:

Subject Line: Please protect DC's environment!

Dear [Councilmember ___]:

I am shocked that green infrastructure maintenance and water quality monitoring  line items were reduced by 100% in the Mayor’s FY26 DC budget!

Protecting our environment should be a priority for the District because ALL of our residents are entitled to clean air and clean water.

We cannot turn our back on the underserved communities that have suffered the most from poor environmental quality. They have the most to gain from these programs.

Please fight to save the DC Department of Energy and Environment (DOEE)’s important programs, such as green infrastructure maintenance, water quality monitoring,  the sustainable energy program, and River Smart!

Sincerely,

Thank you for supporting Rock Creek, our amazing urban oasis, at this critical time!”

Is there anything that a MD resident can do? Is the funding for the MD areas of the Park ok?

OP here- I don’t know. You may want to check in with the Dept of Parks and Rec for your jurisdiction. Good luck and take care.
