Yeah! SPOILERS, obvs.

I enjoyed watching it just because I was really craving a romantic movie with big stars like Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans- you don't see that that much these days.
But what year is it that these people smoke so much?
I like the modern take on matchmaking, I even like the fact that it faced the reality of stuff like SA.
But the slow pacing was mind numbing.
The discussion of not being "in love" was so nebulous. I mean Harry is literally perfect and you are in the "business" and enough of a big girl to know that initial spark stuff fades, and that you can absolutely build a wonderful life together. It's like choosing an absurd idea of what love is over actual happiness.
She's going to choose John and how you going to-- not even just be not rich-- but aggressively poor in NYC? Those children you see that look like her? Where are you putting them? The plan is for her to kick ass and make good money and him to just chase that dream? It was dumb.

The way John was living at almost 40 is too pathetic. I know people like this, yes, but you don't choose them over a very nice and loving unicorn like Harry. To not make your life decent if you have the means is a mental health issue.

I had really thought she was going to "choose herself." Welp.

PP. Usually I would say choosing herself would be the worst option, but I think John is even worse than that.

A solid movie.

+1000

John is such a loser. He’s just hot and has a charismatic voice because it’s Chris Evans. But who would choose him over Harry? He lives in a dump.

I saw this movie yesterday. What a disappointment.

Dakota Johnson is a terrible actor. This role should have been perfect for her because Lucy is supposed to be cold and emotionless, but she truly just cannot act.

I loved Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans but they couldn't save this movie. There was zero chemistry between Dakota and Pedro. It was so bad it was awkward.

Lucy was a terrible person. I can't believe she had two guys fighting so hard to be with her, especially the ex who she dumped in the middle of a street because he was broke. Were we supposed to believe she had an epiphany and quit caring about money? Because I'm not buying it (no pun intended). She had no redeeming qualities whatsoever. I wanted John to have some self respect and tell her to kick rocks.

The only part of the movie I liked was the commentary on dating and how unrealistic people are.

There’s a recent NYT article about the rise in smoking on screen that leads with the smoking in The Materialists. It struck me in the movie too.

I think that just like there's a rise in people using the R-word again, there's a rise in people smoking. I follow a lot of celebrity gossip accounts on Insta, and am seeing a lot more than in the past, of American actors in Italy smoking.

I saw the Materialists yesterday. Agree with everyone else - she's just not good. Dakota shines more in interviews than in acting roles. She certainly doesn't seem capable of stretching - taking on varied characters.

I enjoyed the parts where she met with people looking to hire her, when they said what they wanted in a partner.

Within the story, she will leave John within less than a year. By the time the movie ended, I wanted a spin off movie about John - he had all these ideas on how to improve himself and his lot. in life and I thought "I'd like to watch him grow."
