Over ten years ago, we painted the interior trim of our house a creamy white color. I bought the paint from Lowe’s and I think the brand was Valspar and I think the color was called ‘Cookie Crumb’ or ‘Crumb Cookie’ or something cookie-related.
Now I’d like to touch up the trim and of course I can’t find the color. I see a PPG paint called ‘Crumb Cookie,’ but it’s described as (and looks) more gray than white in online photos. https://www.matchmypaintcolor.com/ppg/crumb-cookie-ppg18-01 and https://www.ppgpaints.com/color/color-families/neutrals/crumb-cookie 1. Do paint colors ever change or go away? 2. Is there a way to search for paint colors that were sold a decade ago? Even if I can’t find the exact color, it would be good to find something close. I could show up with photos of my current trim color, but it would be pure guesswork. Maybe I’ll get a sample of the PPG to see if it matches? Usually we snap a photo of the paint lid before we toss everything, but I can’t find that either! |
What you have to do is take a sample of it to the paint store. They’ll use a machine to get a match. The color match will be pretty exact, but if you don’t know what the paint base was, whatever you buy may be a hair different (like a little shinier or a little less). You can mitigate that by painting “corner to corner.” Paint all the way to the end of a wall, because your eye won’t notice the subtle difference in the paint across a corner. It will still be easier than covering with a new color.
To get the sample, find something you can remove (like a cabinet door) or just use a utility knife to cut some off. You only need a piece about the size of a quarter. |
If you know the paint company and name go to a good paint store. I have been getting Duron Shell White in Benjamin Moore Aura now for decades. |
All places that sell paint have computer color matching things now. |
