The purpose of which is to try wines!
But I have a horrible fear of flying, white-knuckle, and rely on Klonopin to sleep on the plane. How long should I wait between my dose and wine? We have a fairly ambitious and busy itinerary. Pharmacist said "just wait a little bit" which didn't really satisfy. |

Klonopin is a terrible choice here. Long half life.
Can't you get Xanax or lorazepam for the trip? |
I suppose I could ask but Klonopin has always worked well for me so I feel comfortable using it. How long does it linger? |
|
Did a doctor prescribe the Klonopin?
Because I expect he or she would be happy to tell you not to take Klonopin to deal with your irrational fear of flying if you intend to get trashed within minutes of landing in wine country. |
|
There’s not that much difference among the drugs here—certainly not enough to be calling one a “terrible choice.” LMAO.
1 mg of Klonopin is the equivalent of three drinks. So wait however long you would wait after three drinks. |

The half life according to Gemini is 17 to 60 hours. 5 half lives for total elimination. Both drug and alcohol are metabolized by liver.
|
| Can you take Dramamine on the plane instead? It’ll likely just make you sleepy. Obv it’s not specifically for anxiety but I used to always take Xanax on planes when I had a Xanax prescription and now I no longer have Xanax rx so I just make sure I take Dramamine or Benadryl something that makes me tired and then I sleep on the plane…may not be a solution for you but thought I’d throw it out there since it works well for me. |
This made me curious so I googled the half life of alcohol and was surprised to see that the Google answer was 4-5 hours. So if you figure that 1 glass of wine is okay to drive, if you have 2 glasses of wine at 7 pm, you wouldn’t be okay until 11-12 pm? I’d always heard you metabolize like one drink per hour. |

KNOW YOUR DRUGS, PEOPLE!!! If you're going to use benzos and alcohol, you need to be smarter than this. Klonopin isn't likely to be completely out of your system until you're back home, depending on how long you're staying there. There's a reason people use Xanax for short-term anxiety/stress issues.
https://benzoreform.org/comparison-of-benzodiazepine-pharmacology/ But, realistically, you shouldn't be mixing drugs. Everyone does it, and a lot of people are really freaking stupid. If you can't get there without Klonopin, spit your wine. If you want to drink, white-knuckle the flight. Anxiety isn't going to kill you. |
| I say you abstain from drinking. Sip water or anything except alcohol. |
This is extraordinarily foolish advice, and why you should speak to a clinical professional, or at least a reputable source, if you have questions about prescription drugs |
To be fair, OP did speak to a professional source - the pharmacist - who didn't seem fazed at all. OP, assuming you are flying from the DC area and take the klonopin 1 hour before takeoff, fly 5ish hours to the West Coast, get your luggage, get to wine country and start tasting, you will probably have 8 hours behind you. Obviously don't take a second dose and try to keep the first day/night to a minimum. You will be fine. |
What exactly do you take issue with about this advice? |
"1 mg of Klonopin is the equivalent of three drinks. So wait however long you would wait after three drinks" The utter incorrectness of it? The lack of specificity? How long do you "wait after three drinks"? A day? an hour? A quick nap? This is a dangerous approach, based in nonsense. |
If pedantry is what you want, pedantry is what you will get. 1 mg of Klonopin is the equivalent of three drinks in its impact on things like judgment, reaction time, slowing of respiratory drive when paired with opiates, etc. Klonopin has a longer half-life than alcohol--between 20 and 30 hours for a milligram of Klonopin, vs 4-5 for a single drink. So if you are a person who could have three drinks and throw back a fourth in the next hour, you probably won't feel much impact if you take a Klonopin and then drink--even on the plane! If you (like me) are someone who has never had three drinks in a day, you will want to wait longer. The bottom line is: OP should be aware that a drug with the psychogenic impact of three alcoholic beverages is in their system and will be for 20-30 hours after ingestion. This absolutely does not require spitting out wine for the rest of a weeklong wine country vacation. OP; if you're flying in the afternoon, take the Klonopin, be fuzzy on the plane, get where you are going, have dinner, sleep, and wake up the next day, and you are otherwise in normal health/not taking potentiating medications, it will be perfectly safe to drink wine the next day. |
