IU Kelley last minute switch up

Anonymous
Context: DS committed to IU Kelley as a pre business major. The deal was that all he had to do was get a 3.0 and then he would be admitted to the business school. Now, last minute, they're changing the GPA standard to 3.3. Letter just came laying it all out. I don't know how this sort of thing is even allowed.

That sucks. Also why direct admit business is the only way to go.

I wonder if you can hold them to what they offered at the time of you son accepting. Worth a try.

Well actually pre-business is an IU admit not a Kelley direct admit.

This isn't a new change. The kids enrolled this spring semester had to have the 3.3 gpa for the automatic admit. Your kid should have known about it if they were already at IU or when admitted for this fall.

Kids were told by Kelley admin that 3.0 was needed before May 1 (when incoming freshman needed to commit to IU). Policy change to 3.3 was communicated to kids by email weeks after they accepted spot at IU (and turned down offers at others schools based on this belief). Safe to assume there will be legal action, based on detrimental reliance, etc.

Your kid should write up a business proposal/pitch explaining why the 3.0 should be honored and should be good enough. If they do it in a creative way that shows they have good potential to be a business student, maybe it will work for them!

+1 it sounds like things are getting mixed up here. There is no way people were getting a direct admit review with a 3.0 high school GPA, or even 3.3 without a really compelling case. Different story if you are a freshman though and these are college grades.

Lots of policies and norms in this world change on a dime, from airline terms and conditions to rent to tax rates to the type of ID required to board an aircraft. This is a good intro to life. Contents may shift during the flight.

Some of the higher ranked b schools require a 3.7 to transfer in from elsewhere in the university, so I guess 3.3 is easy relative to that??

Never mind, I get what you’re saying as I looked at the admissions page and realize it is for standard admission of second semester kids. But still don’t really get it because your kid isn’t even a student yet. Now he knows what he has to do to get into Kelley. It’s not like he already got the grades and then they pulled a bait and switch on him.

Note too it isn’t a 3.0 and 3.3. It’s a B (now B+) in every class for automatic admission. You could have a 3.0 but have gotten below a B in too many classes and still wouldn’t make it.

Oh ok OP. You file that lawsuit.

Kelley is well-known and competitive and tough. If your kid can’t hack a 3.3, he can’t handle Kelley.

Ugh that sucks. My DD chose Ohio State over IU last year due to not being directly admitted. That said, at least your child knows what gpa they need to get in- it’s no secret. Work hard and prove that he’s a good fit. My understanding is there are a couple of business weed out courses that are tough for the GPA. Maybe figure out which are those are and preemptively get a tutor?

I'm legitimately considering legal action. DH is a lawyer (civil).

LOL. You’ll get a rude awakening when you realize that graduate programs routinely rescind admission. This is nothing. But do fill us in so we can enjoy the popcorn entertainment!
