HA has a better pyramid, but Ross is a great school and the future is uncertain. You can’t really go wrong with this choice, so I would pick on commute. |
Yeah this. My child actually had this exact decision (offered lottery spots at these two schools during the same week). We went with Ross for a variety of reasons (Ross brought us in for a tour and HA didn't and was generally warmer, loved the leadership and the curriculum, we can walk/bike there, and he has a middle/high school option bc of an older sibling). If we didn't have that middle/high school, we would have really strongly considered HA so they could go to Hardy. |
Depends on where you’re coming through but as a family likely to stay where we are for 10-20 years, an elementary with a good feeder pattern was important to us. That’s not Ross. |
With no other considerations like commute time, and assuming you want to stay in the DCPS ecosystem past elementary, I'd pick HA. |
Ross.
No question. |
+1. If your kid is academic, try to lottery to BASIS for 5th. Otherwise, move to the burbs. |
Honestly, both are great schools, and you can't go with either. That said, Hyde has a distinct advantage w the feeder pattern, unless you're confident about lotterying into Basis or moving to the burbs. What a great choice to have. Good luck! |
Both suffer from large class sizes, but excellent peer groups due to parent income/wealth/culture. HA has the feeder to maintain those same upper SES parents in MS and HS. Don’t know much about the principals or teachers, but have generally heard good things about both.
If you can risk the feeder pattern, then choose for commute. Time with kids is most precious thing. |
Ross is incredible. Truly, I can’t imagine a better public school.
Francis Stevens is improving and they have a beautiful new campus. |
Ross has classes of about 30 but next year every class will be getting two teachers. Not an aide and a teacher, but two full teachers. |
We are about to start at Ross. We think Francis is already an okay middle school option and are hoping it will be a great option by the time our PK4 kid is ready for middle.

Great option? Good luck… |
