Dictators/authoritarian regimes and the people who loved them

Trying to understand why there are people out there who are ok with what’s going on. I have MAGA family members who are fine with moving into a surveillance state and seeing their “enemies” (the “libs” and migrants) suffer.

For those here who studied history, did Stalin, Hitler, and Pol Pot have large fan bases of citizens who truly did not believe the henchmen would ever come for them and were happy to live under a harsh ruler and see people sent off to prison (and ultimately, their deaths)? What was going inside their hearts snd heads?

I miss the days when all the Russian and Chinese plants would argue on these threads.

Now that it's mission accomplished on electing Trump all we are left with is these dumb elderly or unemployed MAGA who've come here to own the libs for some entertainment

I was recently in Chile and went to the Human Rights Museum. It was chilling to see so many parallels to our current political situation. But what astonished us most were the statistics on the 1988 election, where Pinochet was finally ousted after over 16 years of terrible rule. However, there’s a breakdown of the votes from region to region and he lost by just the slightest margin overall. He won some regions quite handily. Somehow it seems, humans like these authoritarians- even the demented ones like our Rapist in chief. I don’t understand it but I think there’s such a tremendous amount of fear in so many people, they like being told what to do and what they want to hear.

Senator Murphy said the vast majority of elected GOP/MAGA are fully for a dictatorship because of its political expediency and they see democracy as a failed experiment. While it sounds crazy that some may want that devil's bargain, I suppose it makes sense that if you’re truly that fearful of the democrats and social progress, that you trade your freedom for it.

In China, if they want a new airport, there’s no political negotiations, no getting bids, it’s just done. People don’t have a voice there, but I suppose that kind of thing is with it. It’s risky because you piss off one person and you’re jailed and lose your livelihood, but MAGA will never worry about that. They’ll be dead from no healthcare, tainted baby formula, no worker protections, etc.
