Fordham University

What’s the overall view about this particular college? A college counselor put it on our list and we are unfamiliar with anything in the NY area. What kind of kid goes there? Is it competitive? Worth the experience for the money?

I think it was discussed recently. Surprisingly good school. Does quite well placing in NYC finance as it has a strong alumni network. Campus is nice but not in a great area (referring to the Bronx campus - also one in Manhattan near Lincoln Center). Not sure what the degree is worth outside of metro-NY.

Lots of local kids - not a commuter school but feels that way in a sense. Kids from Chaminade, Delbarton, Sacred Heart, Marymount, Dominican, etc. who are bright but didn't get into ND, BC, Villanova or didn't want to go away.

Fordham is a school on the rise. My brother graduated there ten years ago. Lots of great outcomes in the NY job market. Vibrant campus community with lots of nice kids. Neighborhood might make some suburbanites nervous, but the campus is well-regulated. V quick access to Manhattan, including the Lincoln Center campus.

In addition to local (Bronx) kids, there are a lot of UMC kids, many from Catholic high schools. I think they are generous with merit aide (NMS semi-finalists are often named Presidential Scholars)

It is pretty much a commuter school. Great school with great placement. But coming out of state you will be a fish out of water.

DS started at Fordham. We are from Texas. He transferred in the end of his sophomore year to Cornell. Fordham was a great school. Clearly his experience and grades allowed him to transfer to Cornell so that should speak fo the school. But all of his friends were local and most of them either lived at home and commuted or lived nearby but went home on weekends. Not the best of college environments if you are looking for a real campus environment.

I know several graduates of Fordham and all are extremely successful.

The Bronx campus is beautiful and near the Bronx Zoo. I am surprised to hear some say that it is a commuter school, as I didn't get that vibe. I would think it would draw from a lot of Catholic high schools, not just those in NYC and surrounding areas. You can take classes at both the Bronx campus and the Manhattan campus; there is a campus shuttle going back and forth. The business schools seems dedicated to placing students in internships.

No skin in the game but have had relatives and friends there now and for years.
Not a commuter school at all.
Not “surprisingly good”.
Fordham has always been a good school. Definitely has a very strong alumni network in the NYC area.
Beautiful campus.
Jesuit.
Surrounding area of the main Bronx campus looks very unsafe at first glance but I have not heard of incidents. Police presence (current and former NYPD not just campus police) is like a cordon.
Arthur Ave is a vibrant Italian neighborhood even to this day with fantastic restaurants and great places for students to go.
Easy access to Manhattan which students take advantage of.
The majority of students are likely from the tri state area but it’s not a commuter school.
Smart kids, I’m a fan

So did John Brennan. Perhaps they crossed paths.

Why are people saying the surrounding area "looks very unsafe"? It didn't look like that to me. Do you hear Bronx and assume it's unsafe? Have you seen the surrounding areas of some of the "elite" schools?

Also, I went to another Jesuit school in the 90's, and Fordham had a good reputation then. I don't remember them having the separate Manhattan campus then. It's not like it's just recently become "good." The difference is that it also has not become extremely competitive since the 90s, unlike, say, Vanderbilt, Washington U, Chicago, NYU. The pricetag is high, though.

Within the legal community, the law school is well regarded. It’s considered the third best in NYC after NYU and Columbia, and has close to 50% of grads going to Big Law.

And like Georgetown and others, the law school (and business school) is basically non-denomination - I know lots of fellow Jews who went to Fordham law.

Like the rest of Fordham, the brand name of the grad schools carries a lot more weight in NY than elsewhere. But it does carry quite a bit of weight in NY.
