Reading List?

How does the reading literature selection work in FCPS in MS? Will each 7th grade teacher get to choose what their students will read that school year or is there a list that they must all choose from and/or cover?

There is not a required reading list, but there is an “FCPS approved list” if they decided to read a book.

My son, now a 9th grader, read zero books on 7th and 8th grade and it annoyed me. Now in 9th he’s read a few. His teacher said the texts were selected off an approved FCPS list.

My 7th grader read some whole class books, The Outsiders, etc. and picked some books from a list and then those who chose that book were put in a small discussion group together.

I'm an FCPS middle school librarian and work closely with the English department. There is no FCPS approved book list. Each middle school has books that have been approved by the school and community (including parent readers) as options for reading at 7th and/or 8th grade levels. Usually the teacher offers a choice of 3-5 titles from the school-approved list and the students are allowed to choose from those (and parents are informed ahead of time in case they want to guide their student toward or away from certain titles). Whole class books are rarer but again, parents will be informed and if there are objections the student can read an alternate book. Hope this helps - defintely ask your student's English teacher or administrator if you have more in-depth questions!

No there is not. Every school has a local list of texts that have been approved at the local level-- that particular school-- by a committee. There is no such thing as an FCPS-approved list.

Some English teachers/schools don't allow the students to bring the books they're reading for class home because they only have 30 copies or whatever and need to use them with every class period. So if you don't know that your kid is reading that COULD be why. But you should definitely ask the English teacher (in person, email, Talking Points, whatever) what books the students are reading so you can make sure it's happening AND reinforce at home that it's important. Scary that some college students are saying they have never read a full novel on their own...that's on us parents and on teachers (but more on parents in my opinion).

The teacher chose the book and handed it to the entire class. The parents were not informed. The book had death, violence, bloody scenes, and suicide ideation.

This is odd. My child has read many books this year and she is in the 7th grade. Her teacher assigns 1-2 book clubs per quarter, and makes the kids write an essay about it.Then again, even if your kids don’t get books at school it’s not stopping them from reading at home! Maybe it’s the difference between AAP and non, because I heard non aap generally is better prepared for LA in high school. Could be wrong tho.

Wow. 1-2 book clubs per quarter? That's a lot.

My seventh grade daughter has had two book clubs at school but she's also been required to read at least one novel or biography every quarter in addition to her book club book.
