PCSB June 2 meeting thread

What stands out to me is that SEED's notice of concern is up for review, after the closed meeting about it last week.

Public comment was noticed for charter reviews for Cap City, Girls Global, Bethune, and Paul, but I only see Cap City and Paul on the agenda. Perhaps not coincidentally, those seem to be the stronger of the four schools noticed. I suppose Girls Global and Bethune will be reviewed at the June 23 meeting, which looks to be a long one.

Is the notice of concern for SEED the one referenced in this blog post? From October of this school year?

The blog is pretty damning not only about SEED but about the lack of action of the PCSB. One has to wonder -- had the PCSB taken more decisive steps earlier, could the recent incidents of alleged sexual assault have been prevented?

Capital Village was also part of the closed meeting but they are not included on the new agenda. Maybe that's good news and their finances are stronger? Or maybe the PCSB is kicking the can down the road and waiting for them to implode on their own?

It would be interesting to know how many schools are currently under a conditional continuance I.e. are being reviewed again next year and at risk of shutdown.

It would have been seven but I Dream and Hope decided to close at the end of this year. Even though there are five with conditional continuance, only two have the kind of conditions that they *must* meet each year or be closed -- IDEA and Social Justice. The others have conditions that say if they do not make progress the PCSB *may* do an out of cycle review.

It's kind of a pain to figure this out, I have to go through old board meetings. I'm sure it would be eight schools if Eagle had not closed. It wouldn't surprise me at all if Girls Global comes out with conditions, their CAPE stats took a nosedive. No conditions were applied to schools in the spring 2024 review cycle although maybe there should have been. In 2023, I believe Digital Pioneers and Statesmen received conditions. DC Scholars received conditions in December 2021, not sure that's still in effect. So that's five currently with conditions, three with preexisting conditions, for a total of eight. Might become nine if Girls Global gets one. Out of about 65 total charter school.

Next year's review cycle includes Rocketship, which is pretty low-performing, and SSMA which is so very long overdue for intervention.

Bridges? Are they in trouble?

I know that they have had turnover issues and a director who is long overdue for passing the mantle, but I didn't think things were that dire.

I don't know, it's hard because there really isn't any other school like Bridges to compare it to. Clearly things aren't going great.

This seems like not a very eventful meeting. SEED has a lot of violations. Paul and Cap City will be renewed. Paul seems on a good trend, Cap City's scores and declining performance are more concerning so there may be conditions. Middle school seems to be the weakest but score declined at all components of Cap City.

Cap City has conditions for continuance because of uneven/declining performance.
