Hudson Valley

We are going to be empty nesters come fall and are considering moving to the Hudson Valley. We will not be retirees for a while. We both work at home and will only need to go in to our offices every 1-2 months.

Currently we live in DC. We are both from North Carolina but over the years have gone up there just for visits… during the summer and fall.

First, are we crazy for moving to a place with worse winters? Second, we aren’t sure whether to focus on the left or the right side of the river. The left side seems like it has more going on (?) We enjoyed visiting l Woodstock, Saguerties, etc but the other side around Red Hook and Rhinebeck are very pretty and quiet in a good way.

Where would we best fit in? Mid 50s, mixed religion marriage (DH is Jewish and I am Unitarian), Democrat, we like hiking with our dogs, live music, are foodies, enjoy gardening, bookstores, coffee, kayaking, and I dabble in making homeopathic remedies using plants (just for our family).

We would like to be in a place where we will be able to meet people and make new friends perhaps in a similar stage of life.

Can you spend more time there before deciding? People from other states will tell you both sides of the river are the same. People who live there would NEVER say that.

Winters? Nobody can answer that for you. NY knows how to take care of the roads and winters, generally speaking, are going to get more and more mild.

My impression is that west of the river has better hiking (with the Gunks and Catskills right there) and that Kingston has more going on than anywhere else in terms of music and food.

Would you consider as far north as Hudson? Amtrak station in town, funky, artsy, progressive.
