For real, did our parents let us read V.C. Andrews?

Anonymous
My oldest daughter is 12, and reads all the time. It made me think of everything I was reading at her age…including allllll the V.C. Andrews books. I remember being engrossed by the stories and reading all of the Flowers in the Attic, Dawn and Heaven series. Now I’m like, what the what?! How did my mom not only know I was reading them, but encouraged it and thought it was great I was reading so much. This stuff is beyond trash!

(And yet…I still have fond memories of being so fascinated by these books, and apparently I am not alone, because they’ve all been made into Lifetime movies!)

Did you read V.C. Andrews growing up?

The title “For real, did our parents let us read V.C. Andrews?” made me laugh.

My parents barely knew what I was doing at any given hour of the day. And that was the way everyone parented back in the 80s/90s. Don’t you remember the public service announcements on TV: “It’s 10 o’clock. Do you know where your children are?” Haha. They needed to remind people that they had kids…

Yes, I read all of these and more. I LOVED reading and had older sisters so this stuff was laying around. I’m not sure I bothered to hide the books, either, and agree with PP that I had parents who were loving and caring without helicoptering to the point of reading what I was reading. There’s a long thread about this already here, btw: https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/1070447.page

8th grade, parochial school, Flowers in the Attic was one of our assigned books for reading.

Yep, but those PSAs were less so in 90s. By then the helicopters started.

I did not read her, didn’t know she existed but I read a ton of trash and THANK YOU mom for letting me!!

Parenting is best when it’s a little hands off.

No! My mom wouldn’t let me read Harlequins in high school. SHE read Flowers in the Attic as an adult, when it was first released, based on her sister’s recommendation, and I think she’s still traumatized. If she wouldn’t let me read her historical romances, there was absolutely no way V.C. Andrews would have been an option.

I read VC Andrews, Judith Krantz and a lot of other smut in middle school. Frankly, I’d be happy if my kids read these books. At least they’d be reading something!

I didn't, but I know all of my girlfriends did. Not sure why I didn't, but I do remember thinking the covers were so cool LOL

I read it when I was about 12, I think. My mom was the one who suggested it, which looking back is totally crazy! Years later it came up and she couldn’t believe she’d let me read it then. I think she had forgotten about the incest (not sure how). I also read some pretty racy fan fiction online as a young teen (early 00s). My mom had no clue.

Yes. That series and all sorts of other trashy stuff—plus more literary but still adult themed books by John Irving, Steven King, etc.

Oh yes, all that. My mom had no idea what I was reading.

This was me too - parenting back then was called benign neglect: you leave them alone and they'll be fine

That and all the Clan if the Cave Bear books. My parents were strict, but I had free rein on books.

I don’t police my kid’s books either now that she’s a teen.
