Schism in the church

Anonymous
Steve Bannon has been talking a lot about the Catholic church - and about how Pope Leo's election will result in a schism between the traditionalists and the left-leading Pope Leo. With Vance spending 2 weeks out of 1 month in the Vatican, it seems they are trying to create the split. Why are they so focused on the Catholic church all of a sudden and what are they trying to achieve?

They want to legitimize the white nationalist right, and doing it through the Church helps the cause.

It is part of healing the deadly wound the Catholic church received when Napoleon stripped political power away. One day, political leaders will bow before the pope and do what he says.

Why are you following Steve Bannon, of all people??

This is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. Pope Leo is not going to be as "liberal" as Francis, and most importantly, he's not going to be as intentionally divisive.

Because Vance is an Opus Dei kook groomed by the Dark Enlightenment kooks. Add one part Trump cult and you’ve got the recipe for global disaster.

Loving your neighbor never seemed divisive to me when I was in Sunday school. My parents treated this as the bedrock of our upbringing.

Not sure how or why anyone things Francis was divisive. You have to be a pretty rigid conservative to think that.

1. New York Magazine – “How Opus Dei Conquered Washington, D.C.”
This article details how J.D. Vance’s conversion to Catholicism was influenced by Opus Dei–connected clergy and thinkers. It notes that Vance was introduced to Catholicism through figures like Rod Dreher and Dominican priest Dominic Legge, both associated with Opus Dei circles. Additionally, Vance’s mentor, Peter Thiel, had close ties with Father Arne Panula, a former U.S. vicar of Opus Dei and director of the Catholic Information Center (CIC) in Washington, D.C. The CIC remains a hub for Opus Dei’s outreach to influential conservatives.
2. American Freak Show – “The Far Right is Coming for the Vatican”

The article suggests a network of conservative Catholics with ties to Opus Dei engaging in coordinated activities.
3. Daily Kos – “Opus Dei, the Supreme Court and J.D. Vance: a speculation”

Adopting a Christian posture towards migrants and treating them with the respect that Jesus would have given them is not intentionally divisive. If these popes take their calling seriously they have to speak up.
