Snacks without salt

Anonymous
I am a snacker and have noticed lately that I taste salt in my mouth even when I'm not eating, which makes me think I'm consuming too much salt. So far here's what I've come up with:

Cucumbers (but not cucumber salad because soy sauce has salt) so just slices
Other veggies I like cut up
Fruits (and for heavier snacks, banana or apple with peanut butter on them)
Apple sauce

What else? I only like nuts when they have salt.

Meat with no salt.

hardboiled eggs
yogurt
avocado/guacamole
use herbs and spices for seasoning

You might try low sodium soy sauce, instead of cutting it out completely. Many foods have low sodium versions.

I would caution you to check with a doctor before you cut out salt altogether. I don’t particularly like salty foods and since I thought they were unhealthy, I just ate a diet that was extremely low in salt. It really messed up my body chemistry and my doctor told me I needed to eat more salt. Obviously, I have no idea about your specific case, I just think you should check with an expert before you go to extremes.

Could be pregnant. Or have a tumor. Or just dehydrated. You should probably figure it out rather than just stop eating salt.

This is not an extreme. It's just that all my snacks are salty ones - pretzels, pita chips, tortilla chips, Chex Mix, potato chips. I need less salty snacks and healthier/heartier snacks. I'll still have salt elsewhere in my diet. I'm not completely eliminating it. Just from my snacks.

Blood is salty. You could have bleeding gums.

I like to make marinated zucchini. Lemon juice, garlic, olive oil, thin sliced zucchini. You can add a small amount of salt.

I had to do this. I love nuts but would eat too much, where I’m sure the calories outweighed the other benefits. So I switched to unsalted and now I only eat a handful at a time - just enough to feel satiated. Now lightly salted are a shock to my tastebuds.

Unsalted, raw macadamia nuts are also slightly sweet, just like unsalted, raw almonds.

How many of those salty snacks are you eating? I enjoy those things too, but in moderation. Maybe you need to eat heartier meals and not so many of those salty snacks. Or balance your handful of pretzels with a handful of blueberries, etc.

Also, if you can find them, low-salt (different from low fat) Cape Cod potato chips are excellent.

Tasting salt in your mouth when not eating salt is much more likely to be a sign of dehydration than a sign of eating too much salt
