My book group mostly reads fiction, but every once in a while we read a biography or memoir. I'd appreciate any suggestions you might have. To give you a sense of books we've read and enjoyed chatting about, here's a quick list:
Becoming by Michelle Obama The Color of Water by James McBride My Life in France by Julia Child Garlic and Sapphires by Ruth Reichl When in French: Love in a Second Language by Lauren Collins |
Something I just started, and timely for discussions:
Solito by Javier Zamora - 9 year old Javier begins his journey from El Salvador to meet up with his parents in the US. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/59900688-solito?from_search=true&from_srp=true&qid=OSm40IflBX&rank=1 |
This is pretty popular and it's a memoir.
Careless People: A Cautionary Tale of Power, Greed, and Lost Idealism An explosive memoir charting one woman’s career at the heart of one of the most influential companies on the planet, Careless People gives you a front-row seat to Facebook, the decisions that have shaped world events in recent decades, and the people who made them. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/223436601-careless-people |
I loved the Friday Afternoon Club by Griffin Dunne. In case you don't know about him, he's a great actor and is the son of Dominick Dunne, who was famous for documenting scandalous court cases, like the OJ trial. It's a moving story about family, and also had lots of juicy gossip. And if you're like me and absolutely HATE Joan Didion, then you'll REALLY like it.
I also just read Graydon Carter's memoir, which covers the Spy Magazine years and then his long tenure at Vanity Fair. REALLY fun. |
Really enjoyed "Finding Me", Viola Davis's memoir.
|
Katharine Graham's Personal History is one of my favorite books of all time.
|
A Piece of Cake by Cupcake Brown
Excellent read and very inspiring. |
Born a Crime, by Trevor Noah |
The Tell |
Mcconaghey. Audiobook |
Between Two Kingdoms by Suleika Jaouad. Amazing book. |
Loved this book as well. Another favorite is Savage Beauty. It’s a biography of Edna St Vincent Millay. |
For a biography: Path Lit by Lightening: The Life of Jim Thorpe |
It's very long, but my mother-- who previously knew relatively little about Sylvia Plath and wasn't particularly interested in poetry--read "Red Comet" for her bookclub, and she *loved* it.
I've had "Romantic Outlaws: The Extraordinary Lives of Mary Wollstonecraft & Mary Shelley" on my list for a while, hoping to get to it this summer. |
Its not a biography but if they like historical fiction, there's one about Marjorie Merriweather Post that is fascinating. She is the daughter if Post cereal founder, built Maralago, is who Merriweather Post Pavillion is named after, and lived at what is now the Hillwood estate museum and gardens in DC. It's called the Magnificent Lives of Marjorie Post. |
