How common is it for one bad quiz grade to bring a quarterly grade down by 8-10 points?
This is not a messing up on a final exam but the case of poor performance on a small ( 5 question or less multiple choice quiz as a class "warm up"). Our school has 3 categories of grades, and what they think are clear distinctions. However, they only weighs them 2 different ways (2 types are weighted at 45%, other at 10%). This results in longer term projects counting the same as a small quiz. Running into this issue with our 7th grader, success and hardwork on assignments been unraveled by not knowing the answer to ONE multiple choice question. Is this the norm or unique to our school/our district? |

It varies, not a set amount. They are supposed to have a set number of grades in each category per quarter which might be part of the problem--teachers assign one of the 45% categories to something small that should really be a 10% category. He had a project that required lots of data analysis/writing/powerpoint presentation with 2 weeks of prep count the same as a 3 question pop quiz, where the one question he got wrong messed everything up. |
OP will the grade impact placement for high school or applications to high schools? If so I would absolutely bring it up with the teacher and of needed, admin. If not I would let it go since 7th grade grades won't impact a transcript. BUT, no that is not normal or ok for something like that to impact a grade so much. |
