Noticeable bloating/inflammation from gluten

The past few weeks I’ve done a little experiment where I’ll not eat gluten for a few days, and then will eat it, and the difference is extreme. Without gluten my stomach looks flat/toned, but when I eat it I chunk up immediately and noticaeably.

Is this a normal response? Is this why I’ve plateaued in weight loss/struggle with belly bloat? Where do I go from here?

We've switch to Italian flour, and my wife makes sourdough bread. That's most of our gluten intake now.

We have several friends (one who visits from Czech Republic) who can eat the bread my wife makes, but cannot eat bread made with American flour (even sourdough).

So it might be worth trying products made with European flour. The wheat is noticeably different.

Carbs make you bloat, by helping you retain water. So do certain electrolytes.

You are not eating "gluten" by itself, so the experiment is kinda moot.

Placebo effect is big also.

I notice the same. I deflate when I stop gluten. But I also love wheat/multigrain breads so now I just cut down on refined flour and while it’s still not the same as giving up all flours with gluten, I’m a little less bloated.

Carbs cause bloating. Try eating a baked potato the same thing will happen.

Normal to some. Allergies, intolerances, autoimmune or certain GI conditions can be triggered by wheat/gluten (or anything)

DP. I went gluten free in November. I am enjoying carbs just fine, and still lost weight and bloat. I think there is something to it.

Stop eating gluten for a few months. Give it time and see how it goes.

Fwiw // With age, I can tolerate minimal gluten and only hard, aged cheeses. Bodies change. I baked sourdough for many years; it sucks! I miss it. But if I overindulge, my bloating (and constipation) are intolerable.

If it’s regular store bought bread, if could be the sodium. Processed breads are high in sodium.
Try freezing the bread, thawing, warming until hot to touch. See if that changes anything

Statically speaking, it is VERY RARE that someone has a gluten sensitivity.
Now does eating less carbs benefit you? Sure!

Same poster here, I should have added, "except for potato chips". I forgot potato chips were potatoes also. Hardly ever bought any and forgot about them existing.

Gluten and it's effect do not leave your body in few days. You need to go weeks to really see if it is the gluten or the carbs.
