Why do you dislike law enforcement?

Anonymous
There appears to be a contingent of posters here that dislike federal and local law enforcement. I’m wondering if people’s reasoning is similar or if there are several distinct opinions. I’ve seen several “defund” posts and even one calling for the death penalty for ICE agents. Maybe it’s only one or two posters. I’ll be interested to see your replies.

D.C. told me to dislike the police and support defunding them.

I don't dislike law enforcement. But we have laws and ICE can't supersede those, and snatch people off the street without warrants. If we have LE without identification roaming, there is nothing stopping vigilante groups from kidnapping people under this guise. Due process makes the US a great democracy and that's under threat.
No I don't want criminals on streets. But I also don't want innocent people taken. You are innocent until proven guilty in a court in this country. That has to be sacrosanct.

I don't dislike law enforcement but there are obvious major issues within many departments and the whole structure as a whole.

I don't support what is going on with ICE agents and I would question my friendship if I was friends with any of those I've seen on the news. That said, I also understand it's a job and like the military, sometimes you enforce things you don't agree with. Those who say "well then just quit" live in a fairytale world where they can quit jobs and not worry about money and then change professions easily.

I think the general response to mental health crisis by cops is handled poorly. But it's less to do with the cops themselves and more about the system failing everyone involved.

And the nature of the job (power, authority, etc) is going to attract some not great characters.

It's also one of those things that the negative attention gets more notice, so the narrative starts to become mostly negative and people start to assume that's the norm.

The great hypocrisy is that all those who say they hate cops and the like would be looking for the cops when they were in a situation that warranted them.

Because they smirk and do nothing when I ask for help.

Because, as evidenced by their actions, they do not believe in the inherent dignity of all people. I have seen them take visible pleasure in tormenting vulnerable people.

Because they provide the muscle to the fascists who want to subjugate me and mine.

I know my history. I know what I see in my neighborhood. I connect the dots. It won't be the run-down addicts or rowdy black kids who enforce the will of the dictator, you know what I mean?

That D.C. public street runs through Black Lives Matter Plaza.

Your D.C. tax dollars went towards painting the message on a public street and later, restoring it.

I love the police officers that moonlight as traffic controllers at my kid's youth orchestra rehearsal every week. They're friendly and make us feel safe.

Sadly, as a foreigner on a visa, I've had to deal with abusive border control officers at certain border checkpoints coming into the US. I've witnessed them make unfounded accusations that are later reversed by their supervisors, and I've witnessed them screaming in people's faces, while they're holding young children and babies.

So you need to understand that certain psychological profiles which thrive on domination and bullying tend to flock to these professions. It's not just the decent, upright men and women who desire to serve their communities, saves people's lives, and catch "bad guys". In some of these people's minds, "bad guys" can mean whoever doesn't look like them. And in certain cases, they don't care who they bully, they get a thrill out of it, and are unleashed on whoever their superiors decide can be mistreated. Sadly, in these benighted times, there are a lot of people that suddenly seem to be OK to treat in an inhumane manner.

I don’t hate them all, but I hate that cops shoot people who call them for help. I hate that Ice is kidnapping people off the streets.

We need to abolish qualified immunity. Nobody is above the law.

I would like better education and training for them. They don't seem to know about keeping body cameras on, when people in public or in their cars are allowed to film interactions, or about legal rights in general.

Because they routinely flaunt laws they’d ticket or arrest me for. They abuse the privilege of authority.
