Low college GPA

DC struggled with mental health issues A LOT during first two years of college and failed a couple of classes, did poorly in a couple others. They are in a much better place now and did well their junior year but will likely graduate with (at best) a 3.0-3.2 GPA in a not-difficult major (but from a well-regarded university)….they do not want to go to graduate school but I’m worried about them getting a job with that GPA.
Anyone have a similar experience that can provide guidance for the situation? |

| Guidance for what? It is what it is. Apply widely. Have her talk to the college career office for leads. |

| I had mental health issues in college ( an impressive university) and graduated with a 3.2. I went to law school two years later. Im sure i could have done alot of things. If your child can figure their mental health for the test of their life, that is the only important thing. Yes, i wish i had the drugs that eventually helped me and yes i often still wish i could go back and do college again with a better functioning brain. But its more important that i havent suffered with my mental health for my entire life |

| I have a new graduate and worry for the employment prospects as well. The approach I am preparing myself to take (DC not home yet) is to step back and let them navigate as they see fit. I aim to only offer advice if sought. (Note to self, bite my tongue and reserve my judgment! Worry less and enjoy more. I wish us and those kids luck OP!) |

| Do most employers regularly ask for GPA these days? I was never asked for that when I was starting out after college, but I realize that was ages ago. |

| Only big banks, IB, Consulting and some Engineering ask for a GPA 3.5 or higher. Your kid is employable! |

| What is their major GPA? I had a similar issue but when I parsed it out, my major GPA (relevant to my job hunt) was much higher. I used that instead when possible. It worked out ok. All the best to your daughter! |

| I never checked GPA (marketing). I did care about relevant work experience and also asked for writing samples. |

| My dd is applying for jobs and not a single one has asked for gpa. It’s not on her resume and she’s had 17 first round interviews at this point. Hoping for an offer soon. She has a 3.45 so not awful but not great either. |

Networking with alums goes a long way. Most are happy to help and it’s a good way to see what sparks their interest. Best of luck to your kid and hope they find their path.

| I don't think a lot of jobs ask for college GPA, OP. Your kid needs coaching to help sell themselves during the interviews, and they need overall social skills to network successfully. That's what's most important in life. |

| I worked hard for my 3.3 gpa. I was right in the middle of my class at graduation. My son will probably in the same boat. Colleges don’t have rampant grade inflation like most public high schools. |
