| Do they go through teaching programs or so they just have to have a degree in their field? |
| Most of the ones I have worked with have a degree in the field and then do extra classes, etc to get a teaching license |
Is it an easier route to the teaching license? My daughter is in an online CTE class where a large percentage of the class does poorly on the tests (I know one other parent who also confirmed and she listened in on part of a class where the teacher talked about how poorly they did on the midterm). She doesn't seem to adapt her teaching and the power points seem to come with the online textbook. My daughter does OK, but can't wait until it's over and she doesn't have study materials or a study guide. I haven't found the teacher very helpful when I reached out. My son was in an in person CTE class in a field where my husband is an expert. When he saw the power points and assignments he said the class is a complete waste and isn't even properly introducing them to the field. |
| My understanding is that the CTE teachers are hired and THEN it is decided which they will teach. Meaning "Programming" could be taught by a not-expert in their field. My son's Business/Business Law teacher was abysmal and not any sort of business person whatsoever, not sure of her teaching credentials. |
+1, they all have a teaching license within a year or so, if they didn’t already have one. Their experience depends on the topic. The engineering teacher may have more real world experience than the culinary arts or business teacher. |
| IME most of the CTE teachers I worked with either didn't last in their jobs in the outside world for whatever reason and teaching their subject seemed more appealing, or it was a Gen ed teacher who wanted a less stressful position so got the add-on CTE licensure. Typically the CTE positions are looked at as tbe easiest and tend to attract candidates looking for that... although you'll get the occasional guy who nerds out and is extremely passionate about the subject which makes it fun for the kids. |
