I feel like all the preschool birthday parties I have been to have a carefully coordinated theme with plates that match the cups that match the carefully painted cookie favors that match the activity.
I don’t have to do that right? I can just let my kid pick and if that means bluey plates, penguin cups, a cake with bulldozers and construction vehicles on it, a mini ballet class as the activity, and chefs hats as the favors that’s fine right? The theme can just be “things Larlo loves”. Because the guests are also 4 and probably love randomness too. Or are people going to judge the hell out of me? |
| No one will judge. Sounds lovely. Let your kid pick or do something that's fun. We have had: mermaid themed- random blue and teal and pink things with shell balloons and streamers, fruit themed- fruit balloons and rainbow plates/table cloths, Elsa/frozen - more teal and silver. |

Follow up question:
Can I serve sandwiches? My kid happens to love sandwiches. Is an assortment of sandwiches cut in shapes with cookie cutters, plus some cheddar bunnies, fruit and cupcakes an acceptable spread for 4 year olds? |
I love this! -- OP |

My DCs started decorating their own cakes around 3 or 4 yo. I put the icing on and they put on whatever decorations they had picked out. It was heavy on the sprinkles and randomness, but the kids loved it.

| We had a “rainbow cat” party when my kid was 4. The only rainbow cat aspect was a piñata that was a cat. The plates and napkins were mainly leftovers from other holiday parties we’d had. If anyone noticed they certainly did not say anything (least of all the birthday kid). |
| The only people who won’t understand are people who don’t have a four year old. |
| The theme of my kid's birthdays has generally just been "birthday". |
| I think your party sounds great. |
Sure ..have a couple of different kinds! |
| Yes of course! I never do any of the decorations anyway - I skip all of the themed plates decor, etc. I get regular cheap plates and like others said the theme is birthday lol. We do lots of fun things, but the decor isn’t my thing so I skip it. This isn’t to say you shouldn’t do- it’s only to say none of it is a requirement. I like baking cakes so that’s my fun thing and I make them to things my kids like that year. And skip the decorating things. And then mostly let the kids play - that’s what they want! To play. So take the parts that are fun for you or your kid and leave the rest. |
Totally I will be honest neither of my kids really ate sandwiches at that age but I recently was at a birthday party for a 4 year old that had sandwiches only and it was totally fine!!!! People seemed very happy and did what your kid likes! And it wouldn’t bother me one iota that my kid doesn’t like sandwiches - it’s a two hour party, they’d have cheddar bunnies, and fruit, and cake and be happy happy happy. Kids don’t eat much at parties anyway. It all sounds great! |
What kinds of sandwiches do your preschoolers like? |
| I have been to many 4 year old bday parties in the last year. I don't recall any one of them having a cohesive "theme." At most, the invitation will have a picture of a truck and the cake and decorations will also have a truck. Nothing any of the kids are picking up on. |
I’m one of the pps that said my 4 6 Year old isn’t big on sandwiches but that it didn’t matter you should still do it! But I just realized I’m wrong he actually does eat pb&j or sun butter and j if you have any kids with allergies coming so that could be a good safe option to add for sandwiches and would be so cute cut up like you said |
