Stopping GLP-1 - best ways to prevent weight gain?

Anonymous
Currently on Zepbound and lost what I need to lose, at maintenance phase. I know it's said that if you stop the drug you will regain a significant amount of weight.

Has anyone successfully stopped a GLP-1 and maintained goal weight long term? Any tips for success?

Yes, I know the answer is to continue diet and exercise habits that got you to the goal weight.

Take note of everything you eat in a day on a GLP1. You know exactly how much it takes to lose/maintain.

Then get some willpower.

And keep exercising.

Yes, I currently log all food in myFitnessPal app for over a year now.

Can you wean off instead of cold turkey? I’ve dropped my dose of wegovy and take it every 10-14 days. In time I’ll probably drop the dose again and/or do 14-21 days. I watch how I feel and eat in between to see what works best.

+1. I was going to suggest you take a picture of your meals so there is no doubt on the amount of each food you are consuming. I see that you track but determining the amount of food consumed is where people often go wrong.

The doctor said the largest time between shots should be 10 days - are people really getting guidance to go longer than that? Or is it a personal decision?

I did not succeed, so I would think twice about stopping and do maintenance instead. Not only did I regain, when I went back on meds they didn't work. I am more hungry and carb and sugar addicted than ever.

I tried to wean myself off it by stretching to every 2 weeks up to once a month. Once I got to the every 2 week mark, it made me really sick each injection day, even at the lower doses. Felt like my body was adjusting to the medicine anew every time. I ended up stoping to take it entirely and then gained a bunch back. Back on it now ugh.

I weaned off it over the course of a month.

I quit altogether six months ago and the scale has not crept back up. The drug re-set my brain. Before, feelings = food. Celebrating with food, comforting myself with food, entertaining myself with food. Now I don't automatically associate every emotion with a reason to eat. I'm also better at stopping after a single portion, rather than having another just because it tastes good, or because others are eating more, or whatever.

Hmmm. I am pretty much in the same situation as you. My doctor told me to start with 10 days between shots and then I could push to 12 and then 14. I pushed it to 12 because I was still losing weight and don't want to lose more.

Sure, what's your email? Oh, you don't want to put your name to a snarky, dismissive post? Huh, weird.

I have no illusions about this being a forever state of affairs. Nothing is, except death. My doctor and I agreed that I'll probably be doing six months on/ 18 months off for the next decade or so. And when peri/ menopause is over, we'll see where the metabolism settles out.

How long has you been in it?

My neighbor stopped a year ago and hasn’t gained weight yet. She’s been maintaining.
