I’m 51 and trying to really focus on building strength (already through menopause). I walk my dog 3-5 miles a day and I thought about adding in a weight vest. Does that really make a difference in strength building (muscle and bone) or am I just going to be prone to pain in hips or knees? |
Yes, my doc recommended it and it makes a difference to me. Keep an eye on your posture. |
I have (early onset?) osteoporosis (diagnosed at 45), now 54.
I broke my ankle a few years ago and my PT urged me to use a weighted vest to help retain or possibly build bone density. I bought an 8 pound vest and felt like it improved my fitness significantly! I’ve just increased to a 10 pound and feel a difference cardio-wise. Still haven’t determined if the vest is going to get me into osteopenia (my goal) - apparently my DEXA scan showed that 5 years of Fosamax did nothing/osteoporosis has worsened - despite gaining weight, better nutrition and 4-5/week of 2.5 mile walks. |
No, it just adds wear and tear on your joints. The reason people do weight vests is either for: 1 - They are overweight and cannot run/jog, and want to burn more calories while walking. (Works for anyone of any weight, just again, harder on joints) 2 - They are doing bodyweight exercises like pullups, etc. No other legit reason to wear one. You have to lift heavy weights (heavy for you) to help your bones and muscles. Also drink plenty of milk or get decent calcium. Most pill forms of calcium are not absorbed well. |
I’m admittedly a bit nervous about them because I’ve heard it shifts your center of gravity (making some prone to falls) and that it can compress your spine. I walk frequently, but I’m sticking to weights. |
If wearing a weighted vest makes you topple over you have bigger issues. Or you're decrepit. |
I tried it and it just made my shoulders and neck ache. But my body is not yours.
People have been rucking for many, many years before these vests came along. Maybe try that and see how it goes with a well-fitting backpack and invest in a vest if you like it. |
I used to be into it but recently heard there is little solid, strong evidence that it works for bone strengthening. |
If you carried 100lbs around doing Farmer's Walks, sure it helps.
Otherwise it makes no difference about bone density. You have to life HEAVY weights and get plenty of milk to increase bone density. That combo is the only way. Taking calcium supplements or just walking won't do it at all. |
You don’t need milk. |

Or was a former marathon runner (10 marathons) and soccer player so jacked up lower back and hamstring tendinitis as a result makes running painful - lower back. Not fat. Still a beast at cycling, CrossFit, etc— just can’t do all of those glorious long runs I did for 25+ years anymore at 55…and walking is far to easy—do loaded up a vest and do hilly routes |

......if you don't want to be healthy. |
It'll make a difference in how very sweaty you get! |
Dumbest comment EVER!!! |
