Intended engineering major.
AP calc BC in 11th. All As. Assume 5 on AP test. What to take in 12th? MV calc? Offered at the HS, but Would have to repeat in college so I’m wondering why take in HS. Kid is strong in math, learns it quickly, doesn’t need to see it twice to learn it deeply. But is this needed in 12th to be considered highest rigor? Or AP Stats? Seems more practical subject matter, important for everyone. Not sure if this would allow to skip stats in college… haven’t looked into whether engineering generally accepts this as credit or not. But also, would this be considered less math rigor than taking MV in 12th? Kid at strong HS where many kids will be taking MV in 12th. |
| For engineering, from a high school where many kids take MV, you have to take MV. |
| My engineering major took MV Calc / Linear Algebra as his "math" course and AP Stat as an "elective." He started off his engineering program in Calc 3 and has done very well. |
| MV. They'll be bored in AP Stats. |
+1. AP Stats is easy. I’d take MV if most strong students will be taking MV. |
My DS got into one of the top engineering schools in the country. Took AP Calc BC in 11th grade. Opted to take no math or stats his senior year and focused on other AP's (non math or science related). He wanted to show he was well rounded. Did not take MV in HS as he wanted to take the upper level math in college where he believed the instruction would be better. This was his thought process. Take it for what it's worth. |

AP Stats is a Social Science class masquerading as a math class. Worse, it's a social science class for students who've only passed (not aced) Algebra 2.
No STEM student should waste their time on AP Stats instead of math. |
| AP Stats is OK as a 4th year social studies elective in addition to math |

Op here- Thank you. Seems there’s a clear winner. Lol. For the poster who said their kid took no math in 12th, our school system requires math every yr of HS.
Would be great if kid doesn’t have to repeat MV in college- will see. |

Did all your kids end up repeating MV in college?
If not, what schools allowed to skip? Was there a test? |
This |
Even if they have complete Calc BC their junior year? So you have to take MV? |
My DS high school did not offer MV. He chose not to take AP stats his senior year and chose another AP Gov class. After Calc BC, Stats seemed worthless to him. |
| I mean, check with college counsellor but I have two kids who are not math-oriented and they both did quite well in AP stats, I think it’s an interesting and useful class (maybe the only relevant math class my kids took) but definitely is going to be less rigourous than MV for a future engineer |
| My 11th grader took AP Stats as an elective while taking AP PreCalc as their math class. Found AP Stats easy. |
