If you care about advanced academics, I urge you to get engaged in the budget process NOW. Last night, Dr. Reid’s new proposed budget included cutting almost all full-time AARTs at elementary schools. That means that all of you who have kids in local full-time services (aka Local Level 4) will be significantly impacted. You cannot effectively run these programs with a half-time AART.
It’s time to speak up. Contact your school board members and sign up for public discussion next week. This is moving fast. |
Reposting my comment from the teacher oat thread (and I think we need a FY 2026 FCPS budget thread) since they’re ramming this through in just a couple of weeks.
FCPS doesn’t need to make any of these cuts- they just don’t need to give central office employees a 5% raise. No one else is getting a 5% raise in this economy. They’re lucky they have a job. I support giving the bargaining unit a 6% raise but the non school based employees can get a 1% or 2% raise instead of 5%. County employees are getting 2%. |
Is Reid to get 5% over the increase she already got when they rebrewed her contract early? In full agreement to focus increase on all personnel IN school - including increasing $ for subs-and admin/Gatehouse should not be getting increase |
Are the Yonder pouches part of this? |
The AART at our elementary was really not great at all. Did you see the lame critical thinking exercises that she came up with? Very poor. You are better off supplementing at home. It was not good. I was kind of embarrassed for her and the program. It really does need a major overhaul or it is a complete waste of money and time. |
Honestly get rid of AAP and start challenging our kids in school. We are missing out on opportunities to teach our children when we focus on the bottom 10%. Raise the bar for everyone |
Everything the school submitted for our aap packet was lame. I’m not sure the AART comes up with it on her own |
You mentioned local level 4. Does this proposed change affect center AAP schools? |
Reid talks about it in link of Board meeting about 3:29 in. Title 1 schools to retain aart employee, rest go .5

I don't find their position to be value add. I am fine with this cut. |
So who is putting together your kid's packet? |
Our AART was amazing. 2nd grade pull-outs were interesting, process for applying to full time AAP was well run and comprehensive, additional support was well-done.
And she managed all this only being in the building Monday - Wednesday. |
Our school has always had a part time AART. One was significantly better then the other, it had nothing to do with the time at the school but the person responsible. Most schools have a LLIV program now, the need for the AART diminishes since most schools have a program that includes the classroom teachers. |
Plenty of schools have part time AARTs and they put together packets without issues. I would guess that this impacts very few schools and is not much of a cost savings. |
They explicitly stated this alone will save 5.9 million. |
