Well that should teach those uppity poor Black people, one in three of whom have the intestinal parasite hookworm due to literally living in shit.

If you haven't read this article, it's worth a few minutes of your time. It's appalling that addressing basic living standards in the United States of America is thought of as "DEI."

Maybe "black people" and the state of Alabama should get together and determine a permanent fix instead of relying on the federal tax payer for DECADES.

Time to fix sheet, instead of nursing it along like a third world country.

Alabama IS a third world country. The local or state government obviously doesn't have the will to fix the problem, which has persisted for generations, and is occurring in a largely Black and poor community. The federal government felt it had to intervene and I think that's an appropriate role for the federal government. I bet you're okay with the feds trying to expand internet service in isolated, largely White rural areas but this is a bridge too far for you?

MTG keeps floating the idea of the red states seceding from the blue states.

I say go for it. I'm sick of my rich, blue dollars supporting these broke-ass red states full of dumb voters. GTFO. Survive on your own.

It’s not the responsibility of taxpayers in New York and Chicago though. This is local infrastructure.

You sound like the kind of person who also doesn’t want to pay for insurance for other people because “I’m not sick now”. The entire concept of insurance is load-sharing, and yes, rich parts of the country support the poorer parts because it collectively raises up the standards for all.

There have been many Democratic administrations that could have addressed the problems of the largely Black and poor communities. Why didn't FDR, JFK, LBJ, Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, or Joe Biden do anything about it? They have pandered to those communities for votes and you would think the least they could do is throw some sanitation their way.

While this is awful and disgusting, the state of Alabama is responsible for its infrastructure. From the article:

Flowers, the activist, said that while she hopes the agreement will be reinstituted, she has seen communities come together to make change. Last week, she pointed out, she was in Mount Vernon, New York, where sewage issues were resolved with the combined work of the city, county and state government.

“They fixed it because they should have,” Flowers said. The problem was discovered in 2021 “and it’s fixed five years later. I’ve been working on this in Lowndes County since 2002.”

New York fixed its similar issue. Alabama needs to do the same.

And btw - the title of this thread? This is why no one takes you seriously.

First of all, it's NOT an appropriate role for fed.gov long term. Message: get your sheet together and don't rely on Washington forever. It's time for a little bit of independence and self-reliance.

I'm not OK with government expanding internet service in isolated areas. Not everything you want is a human right. You want it, YOU pay for it.

If the local or state government doesn't have the will to fix it, replace them. Have some freakin' self pride and initiative. In short, get off your dead a%%es and fix it yourselves! You are not owed.

States like Alabama can't fund projects like this on their own because the state doesn't pull in enough tax revenues, hence the assistance from the federal government.

Did none of you take a Civics class?

Alabama could fund this but chooses not to because the federal government does.

They also don't give a damn about us and want to actively harm us. Why should we carry their water when things that directly impact us are happening and they're cheering it on.

Actually in places like Jackson, MS, the federal government did have to step in b/c the Republican legislature literally refused to fix the water situation in the majority black city. The state would not even allow the city to float bonds to pay for it themselves.

I live in a red state where spring flooding is common and at times has resulted in major disasters. From the late 1990s to about 2010, mitigation involved buyouts of property on flood prone land. From 2010 to the present mitigation has meant huge engineering projects, including a 30 mile diversion channel and 22 mile embankment as well as flood gates and walls. This is not a poverty-stricken area, median income is almost exactly equal to national median income. Half of the total cost (currently 3.2 B) is from the feds; 35% of that is a 2% interest loan.
